DVD Drive Not Working
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:18:25 AM »
So I installed Windows 7 with high hopes and sense the installation my DVD drive doesn't work.

The DVD drive came with my HP computer, not sure exactly what the name of the drive is called but the device manager says HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH10L.

If I could just get that to work I would be happy with the operating system. Please help. Thanks.

It is working when you boot? Can you see it in the Device Properties in the Control Panel?

I'm not sure if this is the same problem you're having, but I also had NO DVD drives, 2 IDE and 1 SATA, after upgrading my Vista x64 to Windows 7.

The drives were in the device manager, but showed that there was a problem with the digital signing.

I rebooted the system and disabled digital signing, via the F8 key upon starting Windows, and now I've got my DVD drives back and they appear to be working fine.

Not sure what the issue is, but I can live with this for now as I expect that Microsoft will make an update to resolve this at some point.

Hope this helps...

Also this: Burn on the lowest speed otherwise the W7 could have start up problems.

At My Asus notebook I had to burn onto a Dvd- disk because the Dvd+ was not readable.

So for a good Install:
Lowest speed ro burn
Right Dvd + or - ( Dvd- works the best but is a little more expensive)
Alot official Dvd's are Dvd- .

riso,

Just a note on your post.

I burned to a DVD+R using the maximum write speed setting, which is 8X for the DVD burner I used.

Everything worked just fine. I've had no problems.

I had identical symptoms (HP XW4400 workstation running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, prior to performing an in place upgrade).  Neither DVD drive showed up after the upgrade, with a digital signature problem reported.  I followed your F8 advice.  Both drives are now working fine.

Thanks for the tip!

Simon

SO glad i found this post via google search. This F8 work around has fixed the problem on 2 laps and a desktop  ;D

is there anyway in the registry to permanently disable this as it comes back after every reboot, or should I just wait for a hotfix I imagine this is pretty widespread.  Thanks again.

I too have the exact same problem and have landed here as a result of upgrading Vista x64 to Win7 x64. Using the F8 key at boot also solves my problem.

To all who experienced the problem: Did you all upgrade to Windows 7 or did some of you do clean installs? Is it affecting both optical and hard drives?

I came accross this problem also, but following the instructions on this site I was able to get everything up and running:
