Windows 7 Market Share Still Climbing

The adoption of Windows 7 doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon and as of the 30th of March, Windows 7 made up more than 10% of the devices accessing the web according to NetMarketShare.

Windows 7 is starting to really take off now and when you look at these figures you can see just how much of the market Microsoft have gained. At the end of March there were twice as many computers running Windows 7 as machines with Mac OS X installed, even though it was released just 5 short months ago.

According to statistics from Net Applications, Windows 7 currently accounts for no less than 10.23% of the OS market, having grown from 8.92% at the end of February 2010. Market share for Linux grew from 0.98% to 1.03% in the past two months. Windows 7 though, still has 10 times the market share of Linux. Mac OS X saw some growth from 5.02% to 5.33% after it lost some last month.

If we look at the figures we see that the gain Windows 7 received was understandably from older versions of Windows, but it also shows that the increase in market share wasn’t caused by Mac users switching over. Windows XP is still the dominant leader but still decreased from 65.5% to 64.5% for the month and Vista dropped from 16.51% to 16.01%.

However even though Windows 7 seems to be very popular, it has yet to increase Microsoft’s overall market share. In fact Microsoft’s overall share slipped from 92.1% to 91.6%.

So now Windows 7 is within 6% of taking over Windows Vista and if it continues to grow at this pace, and Windows Vista continues to decline, we could see Windows 7 overtaking Windows Vista in just 3 months.
