Windows 7 SP1 will Contain Minor Updates

Microsoft will present a Desktop Virtualization hour event today. They will be offering some information relating to Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 as well as Windows Server 2008 R2. Two new desktop virtualization features will be introduced; these are Microsoft RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory.

For Windows 7, Service Pack 1 will include only minor updates, among which are some updates that are already delivered through the Windows Update service. But there will be an update on the Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX. The RemoteFX software package is introduced in the Server 2008 R2 side with SP1. These features are designed to meet the needs of users as they increasingly work with virtualization in their environments with Windows Server 2008 R2.

Both  SP1 of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be delivered through Windows Update service and it will also will be available as download from Microsoft Download Center as well. However, they are not expected to announce when the service pack 1 will be made available to the public.

RemoteFX

This is a technology that allows users to access desktops remotely. It is designed to provide a truer presentation and desktop virtualization experience for users accessing multimedia and 3-D applications remotely.

With Microsoft RemoteFX, users will be able to work from a remote desktop environment using Windows Aero. They will also be able to watch full-motion videos, have Silverlight animations available on their desktops, and take advantage of 3D applications within a Hyper-V VM.

Dynamic Memory

Dynamic Memory changes to the Hyper-V operation will enable greater virtual machine density suitable for servers and VDI deployments. Hyper-V is the Virtualization deployment environment on Server 2008. Hyper-V Dynamic Memory is a memory management enhancement for Hyper-V designed for production use that enables customers to achieve higher consolidation/VM density ratios.
