We work with small businesses who are trying to decide what to do. Windows 7 may be the best operating system from Microsoft in quite some time. We advise you carefully weigh benefits against the risks. The Windows 7 will improve performance and functionality for most people. Yet the wisdom of upgrading depends on many complex factors: http://bit.ly/ddj15h

I have been using all the three versions (XP, Vista and 7) of windows on my Pc and out of all Vista is my favourite and I my point of view Vista always stood above Xp from very begining be it in terms of performance, Security or overall consumer satisfaction. I loved WinXP and I still love it but I believe in moving on. Prejudices and misconceptions were the main reasons behind the vista's failure. Before Xp none of OS enjooyed more than a year and hence people were not that much stucked with any of the versions before but a long lifespan for Xp actually was the reasons behind the short lifespan Xp. If one goes on using Windows Vista without any prejudice, he is surely going to love it.

And finally "Vista is 'better' or 'worse'." matters only when one is ready to move on and look into it. If one is predecided about anything than none can get a change through.

I love Xp. I love Vista and I'll love 7 but for Vista, their will always remain a soft corner because it had always been treated unfairly like with step-motherly behaviour.

I can't think of anybody using Windows Vista RTM. It was so bad.
@Omoronovo: You said "Anyone on Vista has no reason not to upgrade to Windows 7". Well, actually I have a reason to not do it. I have a trouble with ATi Drivers on Windows 7 which doesn't happen in Vista. Just that. So I think I will stay with Vista for a long time. (Though I think Windows 7 is really great, but not on my computer).

I'd love to add though that, Windows XP was supposed to be out of support years ago, but thanks to the industry clinging onto it, they had to extend it's support phase three times. Anyone on Vista has no reason not to upgrade to Windows 7, but those on XP may NEED the extra time, especially large organisations, if they also need to implement a new hardware policy as well. Vista and Windows 7 are so similar in terms of deployment and use that they are effectively "free" upgrades in terms of TCO, from Vista.
