Windows 7 Early Adoption Figures Beat Vista 2 To 1

We know that Windows 7 is popular and as we can tell from it’s month on month increase in market share it’s not showing any signs of letting up. Well I bet you wouldn’t be surprised if I told you that for the first 5 months of its release, it now holds double the market share that Windows Vista held after the same period.

According to Web Metrics company, NetApplications.com, Windows 7 has managed to grab over twice the market share Windows Vista managed to attain over the same period. As of last Sunday, 5 Months after the release ( October 22nd 2009 ) of Windows 7, it held 9% of the market. Windows Vista after 5 months held only 4.5%.

But as those of you following this site will know, this isn’t the first time Windows 7 has achieved certain feats before Windows Vista. Ever since its release, Windows 7 has been way ahead of Vista in terms of market share. Windows 7 hit the 4% mark several months before Vista. By the end of January, Windows 7′s usage share was 7.5%, also double the 3.75% that Vista enjoyed by the end of its fourth month.

“Looking at the trends, the growth rate seems to be strong and consistent, with no visible decline,

These were the words of Vince Vizzaccaro, executive vice president at NetApplications, so even he is confident that Windows 7 will continue to grow. He also noted that the difference between weekend and weekday figures was increasing. This would indicate that it is being adopted more by consumers than businesses. The figures for Windows 7 climb on the weekend when a larger amount of computers connected are for home use.

personal usage is growing faster than corporate usage, which fits the expectations,”

However it’s not uncommon for large corporations to lag behind consumers when it comes to updating their operating systems.

While Windows XP still is the market leader at 66.3%, Windows Vista is holding in at 17.4%. With Windows 7 at 9%, it has more than halved the gap the two Operating Systems. Apple Inc.’s Mac OS X had a share of just 5.1% and 92% of computers were running the combined versions of Windows.

If this rate of growth for Windows 7 continues, it should overtake Windows Vista by June.

I’ll be accepting all bets in the comments!
