Oh I forgot this: WinXP search is not a good search either - people just got acustomed to it... - main flaw there: searching for 'remain open' will return all files containing 'remain' OR 'open', while most people are looking in this case for 'remain open' (a string containing both words).

> What he was saying is that search engines ever since the birth of the internet, have over-simplified the way we search for things. In the beginning the internet wasn’t that large so a simple keyword-based approach was logical, but as the net expanded people had become used to this keyword-based approach so, while companies like Google still offer an advanced search for those who want it, engines like Bing took a different approach, trying to make the keyword search work smarter.

This is simply not true! When internet was young there was an excellent search engine everybody used: Altavista.com. I think this site was taken over by Google and the wellstructured search replaced (boolean search terms, near, ... - just everthing wanted and needed) by this runt seach we have today.

I do not blame Google to introduce this search we have today - but I do curse them for no longer supporting the structured seach we had before. They have the raw data - why not have a second frontend allowing to formulate strict queries? Goggles 'advanced search' is not what is needed - it returns more data than what you queried for - exactly the same way as the standard search. So much about imaginary 'historical' reasons...

Back to the topic: Todays anger of users not able to find their files seems to have the following reasons:
- files do not get indexed in all places. Not being indexed seems to prevent Win7 from searching the content of files. I never used an index in WinXP, I just let WinXP search slower in order to find everything! Not indexing 'Windows'-folder (or any other folder) can really save time and ressources, BUT it will cause files to be lost when accidentally stored there.
- there seems no way to make Win7 search the contents of files stored on a (non Windows) NAS and (not all sure about that) on a second PC running WinXP. I would be completely satisfied with a slow, nonindexed search...

The fact that you do not get any hint that there was no search on the word makes the Win7 search intransparent and tricky.

Windows7 is little other than a living hell! I am so disgusted with the search feature especially! It doesn't find files half of the time! It's also very complicated to run. Why did they change one of the finest features of XP? Haven't they hears of the saying, "If somethin' ain't broke, don't fix it?" I hate Windows 7 and want to go back to XP except that I can't because I have to teach this horrible program to others. You can bet that I will be recommending that people stay with XP if they haven't bought a computer.<br><br>I also get annoyed with the many windows that remain open when I shut down my cmoputer -- all of those little dinky trashy things on the bottom, as well as the semi-transparent large folders that open up when I'm trying to copy a program from LIST view into another wee tiny folder. Gads I hate this version! It's probably worse than VISTA! It also appears that it has an awful lot of spying incorporated into it.

I still prefer the search engine of Windows XP. It took me 10 minutes to find how to search INSIDE files in Windows 7 and I already forgot it. But in XP there is a textbox just for that.

about this searching pdf and doc documents... average customer thinks that AND functions is correct, but in (for example in excel vba) and means that 2 (or more) given conditions must occur at the the same time - a document cannot be a pdf and word file at the same moment. Therefore "OR" is the correct one. It quite depends, how you think - in computer language or human language :) But of course, to be human-friendly, windows should understand AND function but use it as OR function to give correct results.
