Microsoft has released a hotfix for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 users who are experiencing issues when burning dual layer DVDs in the operating system. Some Windows users experience a time-out when they try to burn DVD-R Dual Layer discs in Windows Explorer and in applications that use IMAPI v2 (Image Mastering API version 2.0).
The hotfix is only intended for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 users who experience the time-outs.
The usual important words of caution for hotfixes:
A hotfix is intended to correct a specific problem. Apply the hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the specific problem. Installing the incorrect hotfix can cause damage to your system. If you are not sure whether the hotfix is the correct one for your system, do not install it. Hotfixes are included in subsequent service packs that are safer to install through Microsoft Update.
Microsoft basically asks users who experience time-outs to install the hotfix to fix the issue. Everyone else should not install the hotfix which will be included later on in service packs once they have been extensively tested.
