Acer to Launch Google Chrome OS Notebooks – Challenge to Win 7?

For years consumers have wanted to have an option between the Windows operating system, and anything else. Right now that “anything else” is Linux or Apple. But unfortunately they are only a small part of the OS market and can’t really challenge Microsoft, which holds about 85 % of the OS PC market. The challengers, ie. the players haven’t been big enough. If you’ll  excuse the metaphor Microsoft is at the NFL level, the others are at the high school varsity level.

But maybe that’s going to change. Google for size and power, is at the NFL level. They are a player. And they are interested in challenging Microsoft. Now they are doing it with an ARM based CPU and their own Operating System; they also have an interested computer manufacturer.  ACER computers will be launching their own notebooks in 2010 with the Google Chrome OS as the platform. The number that ACER is hoping to hit is one million notebooks.

The notebook may be dual boot along side of windows, but it will certainly allow users a different experience.

The Google Chrome OS netbook is expected to hold a 10.1-inch TFT HD-ready multi-touch display, with a 64GB SSD, and 2GB of RAM. It will also have USB ports, a webcam, a multi-card reader, and a 3.5mm audio jack. In the area of connectivity it will come with Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, and Ethernet.

The system may be dual boot with an Intel Processor. But if it is single boot then it may be and ARM cpu.

ARM is a 32 bit RISC cpu produced by ARM .  They are a leading provider of 32-bit embedded RISC microprocessors As such the Chrome OS will be built into the processor chip.
