I always thought of Microsoft as the original software pirate and computer hijacker. I now feel that apple has become the new market bully. I have downloaded a copy of Adobe Acrobat Creater because I was just curious about how it worked. I have no job and can not afford to buy it to learn about it. I could not profit in any way through this download. So after downloading the copy. I find out that apple has notified my cable provider and had my connection taken down and the program they sent me fried my hard drive. Well I have downloaded about 50 Microsoft programs and this has never happened. Luckily since I have no job and no money the hard drive was just an old piece of crap, but I will never trust Apple again for anything. I will bad mouth Apple and give everyone I talk to every reason I can think of to stay away from them. They have crappy programs such as I-tunes and Quicktime that want to hijack my computer. No thank you. I bought a $20 MP3 player at Frys and it works perfect! No crappy I-tunes. Just drag and drop my songs and away I go. I can use recargable AAA batteries too. No proprietary cargers and batteries. I really don't get how people can pay so much for the exact same thing. More money than brains I guess. The I-phone is pretty nice, I got to give them that, but that glass screen breaks so freaking easy it's rediculous. LOL. This will piss Apple off. If the screen cracks. Tell the Apple store that the phone will not hold a charge. Tell them it got so hot you couldn't pick it up after trying to charge it and the heat cracked the screen. Abra Cadabra... Warrenty covers that, and they can not prove you are lying. This is a known issue with them. I make tons of money now all off Macs, but I will never forget how much they remind me of Nazis.

So do I. I take everyone's claims like you posted with a grain of salt. I can just as easily come back with a comment saying that I see more Mac's with issues in my line of work than PC's. You'd call me a liar, or whatever, and we'd just keep right on doing this until we're blue in the face. So what. Be a Mac fan. Have fun with it. Just remember, there are way more(and I do mean WAYYYY more), PC's in this country than Mac's, and if they were so bad, people wouldn't use them. Windows 7 has taken the "Vista Curse" away, and now, unfortunately for Mac, PC sales are on the rise again even with the bad economy. Them's the facts.....live with it.

I am in the industry as well, my friend. So you like Mac's. That's great. I like PC's(or Windows based computers, to be more accurate). I don't agree with your assessment of Mac's, but, as you have so eloquently said, you don't believe what I have to say about PC's. Big deal. We can go back and forth, back and forth 'till the cows come home, but I'm not changing your mind, and you aren't changing mine. Lets just leave it at that before we fillup this forum with more rhetoric.

I work in a computer store that sells and repairs both mac and windows, so I work with both of them. And both of them have their downsides but although I work with windows at home I must say that there are more downsides to windows than there are with mac. Since mac has launched a "cheaper" version of the Imac we have sold almost as much mac as windows, but we still have to repair loads of windows desktops and laptops and olmost never an Imac or macbook. and I only count the ones that were recently bought. What does that tell you?

Yeah, I use a Mac, they earn me money, sorry I didn't tell you. This site is designed for voiced opinions on the topic, which is what I've been doing, didn't know because I use Macs for a living I'm not allowed to speak.

I have had a PC since Windows 2.0. Sure, Windows has gone through some pain in its growth, but Vista is now a stable platform, and pretty nimble as well. XP is still a viable OS, and still going strong. But, Windows 7 is a real gem. During the time that I've been a Windows fan(we'll stick with XP on up for now), I have had little issue in "running my programs". I didn't spend most of my time "fixing" my XP box and now especially never spend any time "fixing" my 7 box. They ran/run just fine, and I do my work, play my games, make my movies, and so forth a whole lot more than "fixing" the OS. Maybe you aren't as proficient at OS's as you may think? Maybe Mac's "childlike" interface and "dumb-down" OS is best for someone like you. Let us real USERS use a REAL OS like Windows 7. And you all that have troubles with even installing programs should stick with Apple's closed architecture, proprietary, and EXPENSIVE hardware to run your silly OS on. Have a great day!

You have highlighted why I hate the Apple iPhone-iTunes setup so much.
I wish I had never bought an iPhone.
I can't even sync tasks with Outlook my PC without going through a torturous process.
What really alarms me now is reports that Microsoft are going to copy the Apple iTunes business model for Windows Phone 7.
- No more installing software except via an MS website.
- No more custom ROMS.
- Win 7 mobile Devices will be far more locked down.
I sure hope these reports are wrong!

You're on a WINDOWS 7 SITE, Mactard! Why do you even visit sites dedicated to Windows 7 if OSX is so much better? I never have and never will visit Mac sites. I have no need. You all that are Mac users getting on a Windows 7 dedicated site obviously are suffering from an inferiority complex, or you wouldn't even bother with a site dedicated to an "inferior" OS. Windows has worked fine for me since Windows 95. Comparing OSX SL to 95 is silly. Windows 7 is, and has proven, that it's a better and more "satisfying" OS than Snow Leopard. Also, go back to MacLand where you all belong.....and take your Foam Lattes and Prius' with you!

And Microsoft shouldn't do it either, nor any of the other multitude of companies that do. But I'll write more about this in the next few days

Mike,

After following up you in many articles you authored, I thought that you are one of Apple's fans, and you shouldn't write in this particular website. However, you proved in this fabulous article that you are neutral, and you provide advantages and disadvantages for both companies.

I really enjoyed reading your views. and I couldn't agree more.

Quicktime not used outside the USA? That's not correct.

Quicktimes on the web are almost always created in H.264 codec. Apple has adopted H.264 as it is a industry standard developed by the MPEG and ITU standards bodies. It is exactly the same, and interchangeable, with a H.264 video that carries the '.mpg' suffix.

Are you saying we should move to Microsoft's proprietary video formats that create vendor lock-in because Microsoft makes its video formats unplayable on non-Windows devices.

As for iTunes/Quicktime, both use the same underlying video/audio software. All the installation is doing is giving you the choice of what interface you want to use to play that media... the iTunes interface or the Quicktime interface.

If you don't like the Quicktime player, you can download the free VLC Player. Take your pick. But lets not go back to Microsoft-only formats that nobody else can use!

Apple have built most of their industry around iTunes and its store, more power to them. They have figured out a business model that not only works for them, but one that no one else can beat.
In addition you make it sound like Apple are trying to rob every penny you have, they are not, it's a user decision. You buy an iPod, you want songs for it, it's on the iTunes store. If you want to get really picky, it saves the user petrol and middle man costs. The bottom line is it's just cheaper and more convenient to buy it on your computer through iTunes than to drive to the store.

Let me talk to you about Zune, you think it's bad that Apple make you instal iTunes to run your iPod and all the little small "suprises that come with it. Well if you get a Zune, you can't use Media Player, you have to install a separate program called the Zune Software and in my tests it consumes about 50mg more than iTunes does.

As for Google, Chrome is a world better than IE in all areas.

I have used a Mac from time to time and I noticed in your one paragraph you state:

"Then there’s the effect these programs have on my PC. Both Google and Apple install ‘updater’ software with their software packages. Why? Please can somebody explain to me why I need a constantly running updater for a software package that I’ll use perhaps once or twice a week?"

When you install Microsoft Office on the Mac, it also installs a separate program that checks daily/weekly/monthly for updates from Microsoft.

My PC runs on 100% Microsoft products with exception of few 3rd party security and I have to agree with your opnion about it's more expensive to run with CRAPPLE products. Mainly because they lockdown users giving them no choice to use but their bloated software aka.itunees and their inferior toys which i find no desire to buy and have no use for because I'm a Zune user and I love how the Zune Marketplace is very elegant and rich in media content. I'm a PC and I run on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Sometimes I wonder if I am on the same planet with some of the people writing these comments. I used a Windows PC at home and work for a couple of decades. I spent 60% of my time fooling with Windows problems and 40% actually doing work.

A few years ago I got an iMac, and yes it is now running Snow Leopard, and I spend most of my time doing work (and some play) instead of fixing the operating system on a routine basis like a I did with Windows.

I am happy for you that Microsoft (mercenary? are you kidding me!) may have finally come up with an operating system that works more than not.

That's called competition. Microsoft provides office to Macs. They probably have something annoying that apple users will whine about how Microsoft tries to take over their Mac. Same with google and apple on a windows machine. Google and Apple have "one chance" to get you interested in their products, so they will provide free programs that will try to encourage you to upgrade, get more or anything of that nature.

I couldn't agree more. For years I used google services. After finally giving up on the perfect cloud solution with all the various google plugins trying to get them to work together, I made the move to the Live suite and never looked back. Between the outlook connector, live mail (with contact & calendar integration), I can now go anywhere on any windows device and have either a thick-client or web client option.
And it's all seamless.
