The art form known as Ice Sculpture uses ice as the raw material. They can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decorative. They are Ice sculptures are generally associated with special or extravagant events because of their limited lifetime.
Ice Sculptures have to be carved quickly, and the sculpture should be put in an environment that will allow them to exit as quickly.
The lifetime of a sculpture is determined primarily by the temperature of its environment. It can last a few minutes to even months. There are several ice festivals held around the world, hosting competitions of ice sculpture carving.
Several difficulties present themselves when doing Ice Sculpting. Ice presents a number of difficulties due to the variability and volatility of the material. Ice must be carefully selected to be suitable for the sculptor’s purposes and should be free of undesired impurities. Typically, ideal carving ice is made from pure, clean water. However, clear, transparent ice is a result of the freezing process and not necessarily related to the purity of the water.
To remove impurities and to get clear ice the process of slow freezing is used. This allows impurities to escape. The chemistry performs two different processes, water molecules are allowed to line up into the typical crystal lattice while impurities remain in the unfrozen water. By using certain machines and processes slow freezing is performed, which results in the removal of impurities. This process is able to produce the clear blocks of ice that are favored by ice carvers. However, not all blocks that are carved are clear ice.
The best ice sculpture must be done in a cold environment, or the ice melts. However, if the artist is quick some sculptures may be completed in as little as 10 minutes. Of course, it goes without saying that the artist must have the right kind of carving equipment, like chainsaws and specialty bits fitted to a die grinder.
