Fix Stop Error Messages When Resuming Computer With Large SATA Hard Disks

Microsoft has issued a fix that for a problem that is sometimes occurring on computer systems that are running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The update fixes three stop error messages that users might experience in those operating systems, namely the stop messages:

  • STOP 0x0000007A
  • STOP 0×00000077
  • STOP 0x000000F4

The patch applies to the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The computer has a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disk.
  • The size of the SATA hard disk is large. For example, the size of the SATA hard disk is 1 terabyte (TB).
  • You put the computer into the Sleep state or into the Hibernate state.
  • You try to resume the computer.

To sum it up. It can happen that a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 that contains a hard disk with a size of 1 Terabyte or larger will produce a stop error message if the user resumes the computer from a sleep state or hibernation.

This problem is caused by a ten second timeout in the SATA hard disk drivers.

When you resume a computer, the SATA hard disk drivers require the SATA hard disks to be ready within 10 seconds. However, a large SATA hard disk may take longer than 10 seconds to be ready. In this situation, the resume operation times out.

The patch for the problem is available at the Microsoft support website. Only users experiencing those problems are asked to download and install the patch right away.
