[...] John Campbell wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerpt If you are a gamer then you have most certainly heard about DirectX 11 and how it is going to change the face of gaming. If you are like me, then you would be skeptical, but in doing more and more research into DirectX 11 and compatible cards I’ve seen first hand what is in store for gamers willing and able to make the upgrade to the new version of DirectX. While we have been hearing about the new version for a long time, we are just now seeing graphics cards being developed to take advantage of the technology that is present, and it’s pretty significant.
You make some great points on why gamers should take advantage of the DirectX 11 feature. It’s pretty simple to enable DirectCompute on Windows 7 and Vista—just install the latest ForceWare driver for nVidia graphic cards. ATI users will need the latest Catalyst drivers along with the ATI Stream SDK. Make sure that DirectX 11 and the latest DirectX End-User Runtime is installed, and you’re good to go! This post has a few more tips- http://bit.ly/8Q7E5S.

When a $120 graphics chip can render amazing graphics like the ones in the ungine heaven DX11 video, I will be amazed.

But chances are, getting those kind of graphics, even with this DX11 revolution, will still cost people money, and that's what is keeping so many potential gamers away.

This video is kind of a fake you see.why you ask? Well as a matter of fact he used the same directx all the time, only switched between 2 different shader techniques applied to the figures. This ultra high tessellation is only possible because of the current hardware we have.
Also another proof is that to change the rendering the GPU needs to reload textures wich is impossible to do instantly, like there is no way to go for that dx10-dx11, dx10-11.

I DID notice a considerable lag on DX11, specially when he moved the camera. On 07:00 you can see the framerate dropping from 60 to 29 on the upper right corner. Increasing the number of polygons really improve the feeling of dimension but I think that level of detail wont be used for a while.

Improved graphics? Yes. Framerates? Well, let's hope the developers will get this right. The software must be well written to take advantage of the new features. Take a look at GTA4 por PC, a real joke. An incredibly bad written adaptation that don't even look good.
Multi-threaded programming was already possible for games, although not easy and relatively limited, and that is the reason most games do not support it. I hope that this new API will change things.

Also, that "DirectX ten, DirectX eleven" line was really annoying. I did laugh on the eye doctor joke, though.

I don't need much power for my older games... Will probably go DX11 for the DirectCompute feature when ATI releases their lower-end DX11 cards, hopefully in Q1 2010.
