Microsoft Changes Browser Ballot Screen As EU Deal Nears

Google spokesman William Echikson said in an e-mail today that his company believes

more competition in the browser space will mean greater innovation on the Web and a better user experience for people everywhere

Currently Microsoft controls the majority of browser market share. IE accounted for 63.6% of all browsers online in November, according to U.S.-based Net Applications, while Firefox had 24.7%, Safari 4.4%, Chrome 3.9% and Opera 2.3%.

Personally I don’t see why the EU are being so insistent on this browser ballot screen, while browsers are probably the most commonly used applications on PC’s, it doesn’t have to mean you will be forced to choose one. Paint comes bundled with all of Microsoft’s Operating Systems, but we don’t have to choice from a ballot screen if we’d rather use paint, paint.net, gimp etc…

There is plenty of people out there who just want to be able to access the internet, they don’t care how they do it and don’t want to be bothered with all these ballot screens suddenly appearing on their computer. They more than likely will never have heard of Opera or Google Chrome, i’m not discriminating against any browser, but people can make a choice for themselves, they don’t need to be told to.  The majority of people who are even remotely interested in computers, the first thing they would have done when they got a new PC was to install the browser of their choice, without any ballot screen prompts.

I guess if Microsoft do have to have a browser ballot screen, it would make sense to have it appear on all new Windows PC’s. But why do they have to disrupt millions of users running XP, Vista and Windows 7, who have happily been using IE without any problems for as long as they remember?

Oh and one more thing, doesn’t Apple sell an Operating System too? Which is locked to only Apple machines? And only comes with the Apple Safari Browser? Have any of our Apple readers seen a browser ballot screen ever appear? Don’t think so.
