Can anyone tell me how to set up a Windows 7 Ultimate computer, home network (no domain) so that I can remotely access it using Remote Desktop Connection? Everything I've read so far pertains to setting up a host on a corporate network. I've read it can be done but one has to know details on how a router is set up, but I have nothing on what the information is and how it is to be used.

My concern with the windows desktop stock product is over security. I work in a business where we often deal with confidential and sensitive information. Is the windows software more prone to hackers than 3rd party offerings such as remote desktop products from Proxy Networks?

Yes, but you have to do it via the command line. By typing

shutdown.exe -s -t 0

you will shut the computer down safely, and immediately. If there are any hung programs, use

shutdown.exe -f -s -t 0. You can replace the 0 with another time (in seconds) if you'd rather shut the computer down later. Lastly, you can replace the -s with -r to restart instead.

Fantastic post - You might want to add that on Windows 7, when you save a connection it gets stored in a jumplist for later one-click access to other computers. An absolute time saver, that alone makes w7 better than vista for those that manage multiple machines on a regular basis.
