I'm a mac user, but not a fan boy, just so you know. You both have valid points. Mac runs better because the os is configured to run on apple products and apple makes macs, so there's less room for errors. But to say hardware on a mac is better is lame. Apple even removed a support for s-video/component out on MacBooks. And the price argument is really valid. I was using mac since LC 475 (beige one) but I couldn't justify the price any more so I moved to pc just after apple released the first os x which didn't even run fast enough on my g4 tower. Fastforward to 2009, I bought a MacBook. It's freaking stable. I use a mac at work anyways so I thought what the heck. Of course I removed all the iLife or whatever the crap. And the spec-wise it'd be a lowend pc laptop and I think it could be faster, but it's a work horse I spend more time working than tinkering than on a pc. But I do have a desktop pc (quad core) that I built myself and just installed windows 7. I'm very happy with it. It won't replace my mac or vice versa. I just use different machines for different tasks.

I just love people who always have to compare two things without thinking about it. That happens a lot with W7 and OS X Leopard and I just cant stop laughing at those people who really care... I myself tend to say, Windows is better since its used on 90% of computers, but its really everyones own opinion

Bosco,<br>Aww come on don't leave. we were '-' that close to a breakthrough. Now, since you either did not read, or totally misunderstood my previous post, i'll try and make it even more simpler, and please, try to answer the questions and not rant on, k ? Cheers...<br>Spending 'so much money'...jeeze, the amount of time i saved when i switched to a Mac is infinitely more valuable than the initial price/investment in a Mac. No time spent checking DLL conflicts, or corrupted registries, or reading-up-on/investing-in malware and anti-malware products, etc. You see, it's a joy to use the products for it's intended purpose, as opposed to wasting time and brain cells to get a product that has been paid for to a level where it can be used for its intended purpose. Sure, you got a faster and bigger HDD, but chances are i'll still get 'the job done' before you, and chances are it'll have better production values. kudos on the faster hardware, ill take the faster system/workflow. :)<br>Regarding support, as a person who worked through college(while getting a degree in computer science) with 20k students and faculty, with an even split between Macs and PCs, you might be surprised to know that, there were 7-9 tech supports who were supporting Windows and 1(me) supporting Macs. This was around the time MacOSX10.1 was released and Wi-Fi was being implemented throughout the campus(so it was a major transition), and surprisingly, yours truly(me) was all the Mac support needed. Now if only those 10k people with Windows had Macs, there would be no need for those 7-9 Windows tech support personnel, and those funds could be diverted to more important projects rather than to support a badly designed OS. lol...but hey, they had faster HDDs lol.<br>And by the way, you don't need to belittle the 'non-technical' Mac user, because while you are reading up on how to protect against the latest virus, that 'non-geek' mac user, has completed the job on possibly slower hardware and is already at the beach... but hey you saved a little money, right ? lol. In fact, you might have missed it, but VA-Tech had a supercomputer in the top 5 in the world at the time of it's debut, running this 'simple' OS on G5s (get Windows on a PowerPC and then we’ll talk compatibility), this was about 5-6 years ago.... pretty good scalability wouldn’t you say ? from the one-button mouse(three-button USB mice are supported by default in OSX since 2000, and no driver installation is required (I cant believe people still need to bother with drivers in 2009))<br>"Who copies Who ?", ridiculous ? really ? I’m sure it is to you since you patronize the guys who do the copying. in 1984 MS fanboys said GUIs were toys and claimed DOS was great, then in 1991 when QuickTime debuted, multimedia was not necessary and was a 'toy', then in 2000, XP was better than OSX, and the Dock was so inferior to the old windows taskbar. Suddenly when Microsoft copies those features(as close as legally possible anyway) they’re the next best thing since sliced-white-bread. Your Windows taskbar is an ugly copy of a Dock which debuted in OSX DP4 in 1999-2000. And it's only taken Microsoft 10 years to copy it...oh, but you got a faster HDD lol. <br>Microsoft's business strategy, embrace (copy), extend(add 1) and extinguish(destroy the competition).... in case you haven’t noticed, originality isn’t part of Microsoft's DNA, which is why they are incapable of any original though/idea/product.... guess who has an online App store 2 years too late lol...i don’t pay my hard earned $$$ for bad copies of old Apple products. (Also I suggest you do your research on this matter as it has been very well documented (unless you’re afraid to find out the truth), use Wiki if you must)<br>Regarding your laptop, you failed to mention the weight and size of that machine, or whether the keyboard is backlit or not, FW800, 802.11n, magnetic latch, digital audio out, etc ? Could you please address the actual portability of the system, and I’m sure 2.5 hours is enough for someone who doesn’t travel too far from his parent’s basement, but for someone who flies cross country (roughly 4-5 hours) constantly I wonder if having that slightly slower HDD might be worth the extra battery life IN A PORTABLE! And so your faster-bigger-lower-battery-life system fails to meet the basic requirements of a machine in it's class(Portable).<br>People like you buy hardware (MBs and Mhz), not systems. And slap on an OS which is riddled with bugs and 10 years behind the state of the art. I buy a system, not just a fast HDD/processor/etc, the components are only as good as the software driving them.<br>If i wanted a bad copy of a product that came out 10 years ago, i'd get a cheaper WindowsPC running 7. If i want a state-of-the-art box with the best OS, i'll get a Mac. (PS>> i don’t care if the HDD is slower.... the system is still faster at getting the job done, and anyone can use it, not just those who have nothing better to do than read up on viruses and registries and DLLs before starting to use it).<br>And as far as the best compliment…haha…imitation is the best form of flattery, so in that way, it’s nice that Microsoft constantly compliments Apple in UI, technologies and even advertisement, even though it’s usually 10 years after the fact, and most people on the cutting edge have moved on, while Windows users are just getting up to speed with a system that’s 10 years old.

HawkA - you really are spending too much time on this. If it makes you feel better about spending so much money to be part of the 'cool' 'in' crowd and really feel Apple is so much better then so be it. It's pretty obvious you are out of the loop with current technology and whats available. You probably still think windows 95 is the latest version. Again it doesn't take an IT to support a Windows O/S but for some reason MAC users are so simple minded that they can't handle doing something for themselves and need to run to the nearest Genius bar ( and i use that word lightly when referring to them ) to figure out how to load a program. Hell that had to simplify it so much they don't even have a right click button !! LOL<br><br>Your comment on who copies who is ridiculous...Each o/s copies the other and in the end who benefits - the end user. You would have a hard time saying for example that the new Windows 7 task bar isn't better designed and user friendly then the Mac dock. It's leaps and bounds better. Thats just one example of many. As for comparing components simply google yourself my M70sa and what it has compared to your MBP and you can't even come close to features - and again for 1/2 the price and it's now a year and a half old. Oh and by the way the supposed 'great' battery life of the MAC is a direct result of the low end components - i.e. 5400rpm HD ( i'm running dual 7200 320gig ) 512mb video low end video cards ( i'm running ATI Radeon 3650 with a 1gig of memory ) 5 Altec Lansing speakers ( yes built in ) and many many more features no mac even has an option for and i still get over 2.5 hrs of battery life. So when you try to compare your 'latest and greatest mac' please do so against say a 4yr old PC because c'mon really now, MAC hardware just isn't cutting edge. I will say the ONLY feature i like is the magnetic power connector - but again thats when it works and isn't causing a fire for which they are known for. But i guess thats another Apple first huh?<br><br>Anyway this has been fun and all and you can have the last word so as to make you feel like you made the right choice. Thats if you can drag yourself away from those oh so cute commercials Apple does that tells you about all the great features of the MAC...oh wait....they don't actually have any commercials like that now do they....hmmmm....wonder why..... like they say the best compliment.....<br><br>have a good one

Thats if you can drag yourself away from those oh so cute commercials Apple does that tells you about all the great features of the MAC…oh wait….they don't actually have any commercials like that now do they….hmmmm….wonder why….. like they say the best compliment…..

have a good one

Mac 'Kool-Aid' ? yeah...the Kool-Aid of choosing a better product. Besides you folks are content to drink the Microsoft home brand Kool-Aid...advertized to be "just as good as the read kool-aid(Apple)" :-)<br><br>And i too think, we're probably not going to convince each other. But apart from your criticism of Apple business model, i dont see any valid argument arguing the fact that Apple's products are consistently better than those offered by competition (usually 5-10 years after the initial Apple debut).<br><br>Regarding Apple's business model... do i care if a company like Apple is vertical (supply everything from the hardware, software, services and support (with the option to customize it later to my specifications)) under a single company ? as opposed to a Wintel companies like (Microsoft, Dell, HP, Acer, Sony, etc) which share responsibility across the entire usage of the product ? As a consumer...not really, if i can walk into a store put down money and have a usable/working product supplied to me (unfortunately though, not all products are created equal, with the big glaring difference being software, and with the model that WinTel has adopted there are more chances of the product/experience 'breaking')<br><br>"Glue toothpicks"/"house of cards"...well if you know what’s needed to be done/downloaded, it'll take you 2-3 minutes. What if you don’t(like most "real world" users) ? since I switched to the Mac 10 years ago, i haven’t even bothered keeping up with Viruses/Trojans/Worms/Conflickr/spyware/rootkit/malware/adware, and I’m not about to sacrifice all that saved time and productivity by reading up on the intricacies of what Windows protects against, what I need to configure/change, what programs I need to dl/install to get a Wintel box up to the level that my Mac is. On a similar note.... since i switched to the Mac, I haven’t had to be subjected to DMAs/IRQs or any other unnecessarily technical documentation to get what I need done on a computer. Now-a-days i only Windows in the work environment (unfortunately), and there are "IT" professionals who configure and set-up everything. (I'm not in "IT", I’m a software developer/computer scientist).<br><br><br>So yeah...regarding that 17" notebook, if you are claiming that there is hardware out there comparable to the 17" macbook pro's hardware, please provide a link, cause I would be interested in getting one myself (I’m not interested in Windows mind you, but lets just focus on the hardware for this discussion). So I assume this laptop you speak of, has better battery life, and is thinner and lighter than the 17"-MacBook Pro? Has 802.11n, LED backlit LCD, FireWire800, a backlit keyboard, magnetic latch/magnetic power cord, etc... and it's $1k cheaper, right ? <br><br>I'm assuming the laptop you found has all that, if not better copies of those features. That’s sweet.... looking forward to that link and possibly ordering one myself (of course I’ll probably put Linux/Be/Darwin on it), but that’s beside the point.<br><br>Also, I’m curious, and still waiting for someone here to point out an 'original'/'unique' idea that debuted in a Windows OS before the MacOS/NextStep/Unix that makes it ‘better’ or technically more advanced/newer? Cause it still appears to be that Apple is 5-10 years ahead in terms of technologies designed/implemented in their OS and on their mobile devices, and apart from telling me, I drink the 'apple kool-aid' i haven’t had that question answered. :)<br><br>As far as performance, If Windows is in fact capable of performing better(on the same hardware), what exactly is this article dismissing as irrelevant/inconsequential?

Hawka just keep drinking the kool-aide Apple gives you. Your won't change me and i won't change you and we could on for days here, but like the article states who really cares as long in the end that person is happy with their choice. If you haven't yet tested Windows 7 you should ( I've tried Leopard etc and find it very un-user friendly and not for me) as IMO it really is the O/S that is going to sway their mind to windows if they are on the fence. <br><br>But I have to comment on your number 2 item as you make no sense at all. Glue toothpicks together?? I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying that you actually have to download, install and configure something all in 2-3 minutes is too difficult? <br><br>And number 5. What I was saying is come 3 years down the road you will still be using 5 year old hardware unable to upgrade while us PC users can simply spend couple hundred bucks and be once again ahead of the pack. And you really need to do some real world testing as 90% of the time the PC will out perform the MAC. Also yes the 'cheaper' 17" laptop PC has all the fancy features of the MBP STILL for about $1000 less. <br><br>Anyway all this like I said is moot as people are going to make their own choices. Me I prefer to be able to make my OWN choices and not be told by a company what I can and can't use for software/hardware etc. You and other MAC users will like I said before continue to drink that Apple flavored kool-aide.

Bosco, spoken like a true Microsoft fan.

1. Included Apps. yeah i do. the fact that i dont need to scour the web for a decent movie editor, or for a hack media-PC or a decent photo organization app or a high production value DVD authoring solution increase the value immensely. Of course if i did want to find a different solution, i could. but the fact that i am supplied with exceptional quality programs out of the box means i dont have to. "Clunky" would be "Windows Media Player" "Windows Movie Maker" which are resource higgs, and the increasingly antiquated "minesweep" and "solitaire"...of course Windows has to copy the Mac of 7-9 years ago and include Chess now, which only highlights Microsoft sheer lack of culture and refinement.

2. See, i as a computer user and programmer on both platforms(actuially all 3) didnt even know that. the fact that i'd have to look around to find it and waste my time doing so when using Windows (instead of actually being productive), only highlights my point that you need to glue toothpicks together to get Windows to a usable state. Sure u can, if you know what your doing(been subject to said ailments in the past, like most of you), but personally, im not keen of researching every miniscule aspect of an OS to get it to a usable state. i'd prefer when i pay for any product, i have it at a level of simplicity and usability out of the box, with the OPTION for the complex, and not the other way around.

4. Wow that’s a lot of Macbooks,.... my sister’s Toshiba's hinge broke off, my dad's toshiba’s GPU overheated. 3X machines of a relative were compromised with viruses and malware (and they had an “IT” guy to manage systems in their business)…see we can go on all day… I never said Apple or Macs were perfect, just a lot better(while your GF is the exception, I can find an army of dissatisfied Windows users)….and when there is a problem call AppleCare, they wont give you the heave-ho between the OS manufacturer, or the hardware makers…service. It’s better. And none of what I mentioned has been made up. My 7 year old powerbookG4 was running till the day someone tripped over the power chord dropping it 5 feet damaging the power supply and HDD. My 4 year old MacMiniG4 has been running for about 4 years, and only switched off when going on vacation (once or twice a year). It’s been restored once, when a windows user tried to delete some System files (it still booted into the OS but was not usable)….
5. Value…. In the system. I don’t buy components of system, I buy a whole system, which is hardware+ software. The sum of the parts in a Mac out values any windows computer, primarily because of the quality of the software on there. The productivity gains, the aesthetically pleasing, the better performance (on same hardware like this article illustrates) gains…are what matter. Sure your GPU maybe a 100Mhz ‘faster’, but a Mac user will still get the job done faster and have a better quality product in the end.
And yeah, I do think they both have their place in the market. Just as Mercedes and Toyotas have their place, etc. Windows users like yourself are obsessed with size and speed. You get your 17” laptop which is cheaper than a 17” Macbook, but you forgo the very purpose of buying a laptop, by getting one with is bigger, heavier and much worse battery life than a similarly specked Mac laptop…but hey it’s cheaper, right ? tremendous value there because of the extra MBs and Mhz, and Windows, right ?

If Windows PCs are so much better, why do they aspire to be more Mac like in hardware design (widescreen laptops, unibody, backlit keyboards, etc), hardware features(built in WiFi, iSight, etc), software design(face it Windows is still 5-8 years behind the Mac, it has only just caught up with OSX10.1) and software features(Chess ?, GPU compositing and rendering of the desktop, iMovie, etc)? if they’re so great why not do their own thing and come up with their own ideas ? Why always look to Apple for new ideas ?
And yea…. You mentioned a cheaper 17” laptop…. Does it have a backlit keyboard ? FireWire800 ? 1” thick ? how does it compare in weight and size ? multitouch trackpad ? magsafe power chord ? All the “luxuries” a portable computer*should* have instead of just a few extra Mhzs, that make using it better?

So year….all cars have steering wheels and engines and seats, none are perfect, but not all cars are equal. While some people prefer to buy an incomplete car and fix it up till its road worthy, others prefer to save their time and invest in a reliable, safe and better car, nd start using it without having to read manuals and security documentation.

Wow that’s a lot of Macbooks,…. my sister’s Toshiba’s hinge broke off, my dad’s toshiba’s GPU overheated.

You meant: performance/price? In that case Linux ratio is ? as it price is free. :) For me Macs like: "we know better than you what you need", PC/Linux - build your own box and our OS will work on it.

Just my 2c.

something ive been saying for a long time. i mainly attack apple for their brainwashing and attack apple users for being complete tools, the product is fine, the machine that feeds and make it is what i despise. in terms of your editing preference...i guess thats preference too becuase im a media pro and all my freelance editing is done on my custome windows box and i expereience less problems and hang ups than the mac i use at work. i use premiere pro and have been since i started with elements 1.0 and went up from there

Actually, no it doesnt. here's why...<br>1.	Included Apps on said systems. The Mac gives you everything you need in the box. That means you have 7 versions of the OS to choose from, you have just one, which has it all. Then you have iLife and iWork, XCode, in a class above and a magnitude cheaper than what Microsoft offers. Then there’s ‘Time Machine’ (advanced backup), Front Row (media PC), etc.<br>2.	The initial price and licensing costs of using antivirus/antispyware/antimalware products is optional on the Mac cause it is a ‘safer’(im not saying secure) system than Windows, which means Windows users have to get it if they plan on getting online, while Mac users done.<br>3.	Macs last longer, in that the system doesn’t break down(hardware or software) as often, doesn’t require new parts as often, and generally last longer. You will need to/want to get a PC running Windows sooner….for example, a Mac would last 5 years, where a PC would last 3 three, before being replaced as a primary system.<br>4.	Resale value. Since we’re speaking price/performance…it’s worthy to note that Macs retain their value more than PCs, where a PC gets devalued the day after it’s sold, Macs don’t depreciate as fast. 2-3 years from the initial purchase, you’d be lucky to find someone who wuld buy your PC, but you could still get a decent price for your 2-3 year old Mac.<br>5.	Production values of the output of said boxes if equal amount of time is spent on both. The fact remains that the final product, whether it’s a document, image, audio clip, video file, DVD, Application has better quality production values from a Mac…whether that’s because of color integrity, compositing, interface guidelines, whatever…they’re just better when done on a Mac, and capable of being achieved in a shorter amount of time….time is money after all. Whats the ‘value’ of better quality output? think…’Made in Japan’ vs ‘Made in China’.<br><br>While initial/startup price of Windows MIGHT be lower (if you assemble your own PC, but apart from uber nerds who really does that?), it’s the lifespan COST/performance of the machine where the Mac trumps the Windoze-PCs in spades !

HawkA - spkoken like a true MacFan....

lets go over your items:

1. included apps: Do you really use those 'apps' that come with a Mac? Most every Mac user I know - including my GF who swears by the MAC, doesn't use any of those clunky programs other then Time Machine as for real world apps boots into windows.

2. Pricing of of antivirus/spyware etc. Windows Security Essentials is free and works just as good as most of the paid software out there. And as most people will tell you you are just not likely to get a world crashing virus in everyday work.

3. Said GF is on her 4th macbook - her son on his 3rd. Hardware failures in all. So much for controlling what components are inside. Meanwhile my 5/yr old Dell Inspiron with 2gigs of ram and a 60gig HD is still running 24/7 with Windows 7 like it was brand new.

4. resale value. Only true for another person who likes macs. And sorry ALL Computers lose value from day one. Mac's aren't hidden from this.

5. Value? I'm guessing you are only talking about the integrity of the internals? Hate to say it but the insides come from the same Asian makers, and to be honest Apple uses at times 'old' technology i.e. their video cards are almost always last years models. Their 'entry level' 13" laptops are almost twice as much for a similar configured 15" laptop made by PC makers. And forget about the price/comparison for a MBP.

Again, YES they both have plus and minus but in the real world, people do not usually have $2500 to put down for MBP which IMO is the ONLY MAC that APPLE really puts care into. So for the rest of us we can get a fully loaded up 17" laptop with all the bells and whistles for half that price with the idea that two years down the road we can upgrade the internals for minimal costs and be like new again.

Look guys, I have also been wondering about this Windows/Mac thing. Now, I`m not a PC geek by a long shot but why dont we buy an iMac and install Windows on it via Bootcamp? Of course i`ts a very expensive exercise but then you have both OSses on one neat machine. What do the experts out there think? Please tell us.

Perfect article.<br>Why do many people not realise there is a time and place for each? <br><br>While everyone loves to slam Microsoft, I think they've done well on Win7, even if it is what should have been released instead of Vista! </rant><br><br>There are always going to be pros and cons to any software, but as you pointed out, there is a lot of snobbery in which way a user will sway.<br>Live and let live! <br><br>Good job.

Based upon how some people use their computers, benchmarks are important but the reality is that only matters to a small number of users. The obvious best rule will always be to use whatever works best for one's own needs but some people just won't let the subject drop. With all of that said though, anyone testing Windows 7 by running it on a Mac and then comparing it to Mac performance (logically on a Mac) is hardly being even handed. Any numbers are as flawed as the subjective observations of others. Sorry but that represents a waste of time on a subject that already wastes time....<br><br>Stephen

Editing video using Pinnacle on Windows 7 is every bit as easy and fast as a Mac. Been doing it nicely since Vista... before that? A nightmare.

Well written article, it always boils down to preference. Some things, I just prefer to do on a PC, even if it could be done quicker or easier on a different OS, and vice versa. When it comes down to speed, we are talking about seconds, and I can usually live with that. I could care less about all the speed tests.

The reason why I only complain about computers is when someone hears and believes something that isn't true, like how Macs don't get viruses, and then spend all their money on one just to find out that a program doesn't work, etc.

Very nice point of view. Wasting ones life on a discussion about an Operating System, Its just plain old pathetic. These people need to get out more and see what else life has to offer.
