The PC and Mac Debate

View Comments October 16, 2009 | Sean Higgins

Recently, Everton wrote a small article on a tip to speed up Internet Explorer 8. In the comments section a small argument broke out between one of our readers and a self-proclaimed Mac fanboy. Reader GreenOneMan wrote “Macs are built better, work better, and have better, more streamlined support.” He wrote a lot more fanboy trash but I refuse to post anymore of his unfounded drivel.

I am of course a Windows user; some would even call me a fanboy for writing for a Windows news site. Whatever, I could care less. Computers are just tools to get a task or tasks complete. The purpose of this article is not to start a flame war, although it will. The purpose is to address why Mac user consider their computers and operating systems superior to PC users; then to completely debunk them. Let’s get started.

PC'S vs Macs

A big reason I hear Mac users say their computers are better is the lack of viruses. I personally have not had a virus on my windows computer since I first installed anti-virus software 8 years ago. Mac users like to say their computers can’t get viruses. That is completely false. No system is safe from viral attacks. The reason windows systems have had problems with viruses is because of market share. More people use windows than any other operating system. So if I were a hacker or programmer who wanted to attack the most computers with my spyware or malware. I would make it attack the largest portion of computer users possible. Hence, the windows and viruses myth. To have a great computer experience on a windows machine, use anyone of the recommendations in this article’s comment section.

“Macs are built better.” Built better how exactly? I have used a Mac before and cannot agree with this argument at all. Are they built that much better as to costing three times as much as a PC? I think not. I am sure some fanboy will be quick to point out how they are built better than PCs. But are you willing to compare Macs with all PC makers? I doubt it. Sony and HP make really solid PC’s, not to mention Toshiba. I would put any of these manufactures up against your apple any day of the week. I myself can build an ultra-high end computer for way under the cost of a Mac. I could use top of the line components all around and still be $1000 under the price range of a competing Mac. It would also perform better than your Mac because I was able to put better components in it for a less amount of money.

mac vs pc title 12 The PC and Mac Debate

Somebody please explain to me how Macs “work better”. Is there something Macs can do that PC’s cant? No, there isn’t. So I really don’t know how this is even an argument. My PC performs flawlessly everyday with zero problems or issues. In fact it is the other way around. How about the complete lack of games on Macs? If you want to play the best games on the market you better have a PC. Macs support for games is lacking to say the least. This is because Macs only make up like 10% of the market share. Which is tiny compared to the windows market share. So it’s no wonder you have so little software and games to choose from. Yet you still proclaim Macs are better.

I think I have written enough to debunk most of the points on how Macs are better than PC’s. I am waiting for your rebuttals in the comment section Mac fanboys. You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting.

  1. I guess I just grew up and gaming has no impact on my choice of computing platform. That, or I refuse to let the 10% of the time I spend gaming force me to endure a substandard operating system for the other 90% of my computer use. I have a 360 and a ps3, and while I understand that the texture quality and detail I get does not equal a PC gaming rig, I would rather compromise and enjoy games that way and use an operating system that I feel is better in every way. Also, while computer audio is much improved, I don't think any of you are getting as good an audio experience on your PCs as I am in my living room using a B&K 200 watt 5 channel amp, Tannoy loudspeakers, and a 900 watt SVS subwoofer, and the audio is every bit as important to me as the visual.

I would agree that OS X is not the server platform that it is the desktop. However, I would recommend FreeBSD, which makes a better server than linux any day of the week, but that's another argument.

  2. Ultimately this is why they make more than one flavor of ice cream. Not everyone likes the same thing.

Arguing about the relative merits of one system over the other is one thing. Reading a bunch of comments that boil down to “windoze rulz, macs are for fags” gets tiresome, especially when you know that the pimple-faced 15 year olds who left those comments have never used a Mac.

I'll just put it like this. This is what my computer consists of:

MSI DKA790GX Platinum MB, AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb OC'd at 3.48 GHZ, 8 GB OCZ HPC Reaper DDR2 1066 ram, 1 Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB HDD + 2 Maxtor 300GB HDDs in a RAID 0 = 1.6 TB of hard storage, 2 optical drives, MSI Radeon HD 3850 OC Edition, 750w PC Power & Cooling PS. OS: Windows 7.

    Cost to build= Approximately $800

Savings over comparable 8 core Mac Pro= $2400

    Problems so far= 0

Full satisfaction at a quarter of the cost= Priceless

    Nuff said.

Oh, and I built it back in February.

honestly i think having a mac or windows computer comes down to personal preference, but i will agree that windows is better for business in the current climate. also “you still use windows to play games. That show windows still importance to evryone over mac”, what is that??? seriously if you think everyone plays games on a computer then maybe you are out of contact with the female species. just as many women these days use computers and i'm sure they don't all play games. someone else mentioned that they could go and bulid a computer at higher specs and same quality for $1000 less than a mac. big deal! not everyone (95%) of the population knows or wants to know how to build and set up a new computer DIY. in my experience of all the pcs and macs i've used or owned, macs are alot more efficient and “easy to get along with)” than pcs, and don't have endless pointless dialogue boxes. just 3 days ago i spent 3 (yes three!) hours setting up a BNIB HP compaq for my employer. this is absurd. that didn't include getting all of her own software and peripherals installed either.

i certainly believe if one has the time and patience and ability to select a quality windows box and maintain it, they can be much cheaper and certainly fine computers. but 90% of the population are not interested in this. and the time that macs last with out “bit rot” they're cheaper than an average consumer would spend on computers in 5 to 6 years anyway.

i think my experience speaks for itself =]

Well. I am a recent mac user. And now a recent (again) windows 7 user hopefully soon.

I went through 5 imacs in the last month. Yes they are well built. But how about the components they use?

1st imac. sent with the screen chipped from the power cord coming loose and banging against the screen.

2nd. Yellow screen of death. The screen was yellow on the right hand side.

3rd. Had a large black blob in the middle of the screen. Called LCD leak from the apple genius?

4th. the screen has piece of lint or something stuck behind the glass on the lower right hand corner. Has more than 22 stuck or dead pixels. 22!

As far as OSX goes it is really great, but is it better or easier to use than W7? No. I would call it a wash between the two now.

W7 is more compatable and you have more freedom to do as you with with your software.

Example I don't want to use iphoto for my pics and prefer picasa. I fire up picasa on the mac and everything is fine, until I try to get my iphoto libary directly off the iphone. The iphone does not show up as a drive or cannot access the iphoto folder within the iphone itself.

But it shows up in W7. and picasa can get the photos off the iphone like it's a camera. No problem.

I really like the rhapsody app on W7 and it is not avail on OSX.

No TV tuner sucks, they want you to drink the itunes cool aid and buy only from them. No thanks.

These are first hand experiences. I don't hate OSX and if they did what I needed them too, the imac would stay, but they are using IPS panels, that are faulty. LG is not the best manufacturer.

As far as a replacement the Lenovo A700 specs are looking to outpace the imacs. What doesn't it have? And Lenovo quality even surpasses Apples.
