Actually a firewall protects you from automated malware such as worms to look for unpatched vulnerabilities in the OS. Its not simply to protect from hackers. As an example if Windows XP had a built in firewall during the dark days of MS Blaster the impact of that worm would have been virtually nonexistent.

I tried Kaspersky on 7 RC and deleted it within the week in favour of the Norton 360 Beta for one reason; it asked me every 2 minutes if I wanted to allow internet traffic.

Oh sure, handy feature to have IF YOU CAN SHUT IT OFF WHEN YOU WANT. I tried, and I failed.

I use M$ Security Essentials now. It’s free, low profile, simple etc. Is it perfect? Probably not. But then again, I’ve used Norton, Mcafee, PcCillin, AVG, Nod32, and they have ALL at one time or another been completely useless.

Stephen diffently keep Windows Defender.. An Anti-Virus and a firewall is two diffrent things 1: An Anti-Virus (as in the name) protects for viruses 2: A Firewall protects your computer from hackers. So deffently keep Windows Defender and an Anti-Virus

I have struggled to find a good anti-virus program for Windows 7. Firstly I tried the Panda Beta for several weeks, it had a clear interface, and seemed to work well, however it did not have a compatible reporting system. This meant that Windows was unable to check if my machine was secure or not.

Kaspersky ground my machine to a halt, it took ages to perform the updates, then reported that some updates were unable to be installed. Kaspersky then blocked me from visiting the Yahoo Mail website, citing Trojan activity.

Loaded Avast, the interface looks like an audio player, and it took a while to work out what the buttons do. Avast has found 3 Trojans on my system, and secured them into a vault. Avast updates itself very quickly, then announces in a loud voice that it has been “updated”

I also have Windows Defender on my machine, I would appreciate any advice on whether to run Windows Defender as well as an anti-virus program, or should I remove Windows Defender, and just run an anti-virus?

Since for some reason I couldn’t get updates for Avira anymore, which for the rest has always worked fine with me, I installed MSE. It severely slowed down my system and I threw it off again after a couple of days. I’m now running AVG which works fine.

I use Avira Security Suite Premium and it works great. W7 (64bit) recognizes both Avira antivirus and firewall, and disables built in firewall.

I use Kaspersky Internet 2010 and it works good compaired to others I tried in past
years such as Mcafee and Norton. I would recommend Kaspersky to anyone.

The new Norton Internet Security 2010 was rebuilt for 2007y and it works great. It’s not the old Norton, believe me! It’s also light on system resources.

I’m using a McAffee beta for Windows 7 and I’m very impressed with it; so much so I’ll more than likely purchase it when released and I’ve not been too impressed with McAffee in the past. I’ve not noticed any system slowdown and the interface itself is fairly clean and non-intrusive. It monitors my home network as well. Download the beta and have a look at least.

First, Kaspersky is NOT certified for Windows 7 – the company has indicated they will put out a new version AFTER Windows 7 is released. All you need to do is go to their forums to confirm that fact. Second, if you look around their forums you can also find people who are having problems with the program with Windows 7. Third, if you go to the Microsoft Technet forums you'll find other Kaspersky issues, including a BSOD problem in the past. Finally, given the huge problems people had running Kasperky's products with Vista, smooth sailing should not be assumed. I'll never touch a Kaspersky product again, after I was directed to only use their beta server for updates for a couple months with Vista (was also the only time I ever encountered a BSOD with Vista). I was less than impressed with being directed to “use at your own risk updates” for a product I purchased that claimed Vista compatibility. I was equally unimpressed with the useless alleged tech support….

I’ve found McAfee to be one of the nicest AV around. I’ve tried Norton and about three more AV, and many of them (especially Norton) will get complicated when finding and dealing with viruses. So far only McAfee has been able to detect when ANY program tries to access the files or internet. Its simple and will give you several options on what you wanna do with the virus or whatever problem there is.
The only bad thing is that in tends to slow computer speed a bit, but I guess performance overcomes that obstacle.

I think Im gonna try MSEssentials. I’ll see how it goes.

I use a combo of AVG free and MSE, and it works great! Between the two, almost all known types of computer maladies are detected.

Also im careful about what i do on the web. Havent had a warning in a good long time…

I’ve used both in Windows 7 so far. I’ve used MS security essentials during the beta phase when Kaspersky use to keep crashing Windows 7 builds and started using it again when they announced that customers got a free upgrade to the 2010 version.

It should be noted that a 1yr license/subscription for kaspersky is very cheap (I can get them for $20 AUD from a store I go to regularly, $25-$30 in some other places), however live essentials seems very good too especially since its free to anyone with legit copies of Windows.

Upon installing the Windows 7 RTM on a friend’s machine yesterday, I setup security essentials. I may or may not move him to kaspersky, but for a light weight and free AV, security essentials seems excellent. Of course, kaspersky is also great and its not a resource hog (unlike some other famous AV suites, not mentioning any names now)

First: Get your UAC to high (i prefer highest) level. Now you are 30% protected (+windows firewall). Then get Microsoft Security Essentials. Its free and friendly with your resources. Now your are 60% protected. The rest 40% is how you protect yourself from internet. If you use cracks & stuff then all i wrote before are useless. People usually don’t get that.

I have to vote for Kaspersky. Ive used since since XP and have used it on every OS since. It runs better than Norton and McAfee and allows for updates to any version with the one licence. I highly recommend it!

Get microsoft security essentials, I run it along with norton 360, and i went to download a file from the web. Microsft security essentials was the only program to detect the trojan virus i was about to install. It instanly alerted my and stopped the download. I used to say Norton is better than anything, but now I’m not so sure.

Yes, I update the programs every day at the same time, and they update themselves. It was dissapointing that my free virus software did better than my $70 version of Norton

I have been using NOD32 4.0 and although it feels like there is room for some improvements, I am very happy with the product overall and have not experienced any problems at all with it. (64-bit RC)

Why use an anti-virus, I never use one and I install a program every so often to scan, but they never-ever find anything. just run firefox with noscript and adblock plus. really that is all I do for security and I have never had an malicious programs on my computer. I surf all parts of the interwebs. =)

I’m using Avira Antivir since first 7000 beta days. It’s light and I see no reason so far to switch to MSE. Both are free and pretty lightweight.

I previously used Avast, but I swapped to MSE. Avast slowed my system considerably, especially after upgrading to SSD – previously the lag wasn't very noticeable since the hard disk was slowing stuff down anyway.

Swapped to MSE primarily for performance reasons, so far it's the only “modern” antivirus I've used that hasn't yet flagged any of my safe programs from being viruses. Other antiviruses are far too sensitive in my opinion – especially AVG and mcafee. At least MSE is unlikely to delete any system files accidentally.

I have been using security essentials ever since it came out in beta. It works verry well. I have used avg and McAfee before but security essentials has found more viruses. Also security essentials is much easier to setup. You just run through the setup and it updates and runs a first scan right away. Also the best thing is it is FREE!!
