I like to think that games for windows have already taken off, even without Windows 7. I think there will always be dedicated console game players, and people that can't fathom playing games on anything but their PC (look at the big MAC vs PC gaming debates that have been going on for decades!) Then I honestly thing there's a third group (Of which I feel I am a part of) - I'll play my games on whatever platform that game happens to be available on. If the game is windows only, then that's where I will play it, if it's only for the Xbox 360 - then I'll play it there.

I think a more streamlined, new user friendly way of installing/arranging/organizing games on windows would make a huge difference as to how every day PC users would gravitate towards games for windows.

I highly doubt Microsoft will start charging AGAIN for their LIVE service on Windows.
After all the service started as a paid subscription one, but this model simply didn't work on PCs and they had to get rid of the gold subscription and upgrade the silver one with full online privileges (this happened in July 2008).

If they moved once again to a paid subscription, people would simply leave it out. PC gaming has always had free online (except for MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, which make sense since they allow a massive ammount of players at the same time and they offer extended online gaming sessions).
Ask Epic Games how well the subscription service worked out on Gears of War for PC. It ended up being a huge fiasco, and the game's sales didn't pick up more until they got rid of

its inevitible that we ma have to pay for online games if they all adopt the games for windows live service, like someone once said to me, if everyone started pitching flags in their gardens then there would inevitably be a flag tax from the government. so i think the current system is as good as it should be, no payment except when you originally buy, subscription based systems would make me frustrated and would probably stop gaming on those games
