If you're talking about the upcoming OS then i think it's better to wait. It isn't that difficult for Google to offer Chrome, Firefox, and Konqueror, which are all those who work on Linux. And Firefox and Chrome belong to Google. And nobody wants konqueror. So, unless Microsoft releases a Linux version of Internet Explorer, i think Google will do just fine.

I just wonder:
Will Google be forced to take off the CHROME BROWSER in the European version? After all, why should ANTITRUST apply only to Microsoft. - Oh, wait! The new Google OS is made 90% of the CHROME BROWSER and a little bit Linux ... hmmm, now I am confused!

I find Chrome faster in a number of ways to IE7 or 8. Am not having any probs with it under Win 7. I have also got a virtual environment which is where google's os will go so I can check it out in a contained environment away from my personal stuff.

Perhaps Google should create a working, legitimate web browser before they jump into an OS. just a thought here.

A fast, simple, secure OS is an excellent idea. But i don't want an OS JUST for browsing. I want it for gaming, and multimedia, and work. That's why it's called an OS.
I think they should grab Linux, slim it down, and there it is. Slim, simple, fast and secure...

It's just Linux with google branding all over it. It will have about as much penetration into Windows market share as existing distros has. The term typically used is "negligible".

Great points.

I actually take the long view on all these perceived security issues. I can find a persons social security number for $25.

I can get a copy of their credit report with that information. I can find their home address with a Google search.

There is less security today than there was 5 years ago.

The marketplace usually works out the balance between functionality and security due to competition.

If Google don't secure their OS, people simply won't use it and will just use a competitor.

Thanks for being willing to state the obvious (in this case, I am serious - no joke or sarcasm). Given Google's penchant for appropriating peoples' private information via their search engine, I am just going to get in line now to give them access to all of my files too. For all the talk about Microsoft, Google is the company that poses the greatest risk to competition (and to certain forms of computer based personal liberty) - they just do it behind a Smiley face button. FWIW though, since this is something Google intends to sell, and will undoubtedly bundle with its browser and other Google apps, I would suggest there is little doubt Microsoft's lawyers will file suit on the same grounds used to attack them in the anti-trust suit....

Sure, it will probably perform well. But it's GOOGLE, and they want this OS to strongly interweve with the INTERNET. Would you trust putting personal information on a system made by them? That's my problem.

I think in the short term Microsoft should not be worried because Google OS is in the development phrase but Microsoft should keep a eye on it just to see how it goes. Microsoft should launch "gazelle" to compete with the likes of Google before they become mature in the "WebOS" like in their search engine before lagging behind.

I think in the short term Microsoft should not be worried because Google OS is in the development phrase but Microsoft should keep a eye on it just to see how it goes. Microsoft should launch “gazelle” to compete with the likes of Google before they become mature in the “WebOS” like in their search engine before lagging behind.

Based on the bangup job they did with the Chrome browser, Microsoft should be worried. They can make a light and fast operating system that will install with minimal fuss and a cheap to nonexistent price.

Heck, knowing Google, they might even give it away the home version for free as long as you put up with the ads.

They might then release an ad free version for enterprises.

Either way, MSFT be very afraid.
