I generally enjoy quite a lot Apple industrial design, but their mouses are most of time TERRIBLE!

Remember the round puck mouse: one button UTTER-SH*T!

Then they acknowledge the concept of multiple buttons.

The mighty mouse is somewhat not that great: the innability to combine button press (either one is pressed! not both) and the shiny white finish that become discusting after a few use.

Apple hardware is generally super, but their mouses are not up to the rest of their design!

Well, I am again thankful for the competition between Apple, Microsoft, and GNU/Linux via various desktop environments. I think Windows 7 raises the bar a little, and is the first Windows OS I've chosen to use regularly since 2000 (even though I've had XP...I seldom used the machines in that fashion preferring to use GNU/Linux on them). I'm also a Mac user, and have been, going all the way back to the Mac Plus. I'm using Windows 7 on my bootcamp partition on a MacBook now, and run GNU/Linux on it in a virtual machine as well. Best of all three worlds for me and I'm grateful and thankful for all of them.

Honestly, between DOSbox and running an XP install inside Parallels, I have had great luck with gaming. In fact, Parallels runs most of the classic Windows games I've thrown at it better than any PC I ever had. Of course, that is going back a few years.

Is it me, or do I find that Windows 7 is not any more "functional" in terms of finding things than Vista was, I really do NOT like the Control Panel. I mean it's great that they have added new eye candy like Aero-snap, Areo-peek gotta say the gimmicks of the Windows 7 interface just don't cut the upgrade price, oh and speed seems the same as it was in Windows Vista especially for Video editing.
I really do hope that Microsoft do better this time around as much as any other Windows Enthusiast, but OS X Leopard is "snappier" for Multimedia, as well as every other task I seem to throw at it including CoD4. While being more expensive seems to be the only thing on Windows users lists I know for a fact that my day-to-day tasks are much smoother on a Mac, and don't hit the big Windows Button on me and start saying I'm wrong it's a bloody opinion and I am entitled to it!

Looking forward to getting Snow Leopard and so is my 40 bucks to upgrade. And I'll stick to the Windows 7 RC till that dies only have it to play my older PC games which is not often as CoD4 seems to take up the majority of my gaming time. Other than that I'll stick to my Playstation 3.

I love macs and would own one if they weren't that expensive.

Having said that, I feel that unless Apple make a fundamental change, they will continue to be a minority player both in the enterprise and on the home desktop.

You can have the greatest and smoothest functionality in the world but at $1700, it's not going to sell to a mass market. Especially since you would get a comparable PC for $1000 cheaper.

Windows 7 isn't as smooth as OS X and Apples GUI... BUT it's a great start for Microsoft and will give them a boost in the right direction.

1989 GUI comparison:

Windows 2.x
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/windows-2.gif

NeXTSTEP 1.0
http://www.ohlfs.com/keith/self/next/sdump3.gif

While NeXTSTEP didn't offer support for color monitors until 1990, I think it's easy enough to compare screenshots, think about the year being 1989, and decide which one represented a revolution in operating system interface design and which one was a flat, albeit colored, shell for MS-DOS.

1989 GUI comparison:

Windows 2.x
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/windows-2.gif

NeXTSTEP 1.0
http://www.ohlfs.com/keith/self/next/sdump3.gif

While NeXTSTEP didn't offer support for color monitors until 1990, I think it's easy enough to compare screenshots, think about the year being 1989, and decide which one represented a revolution in operating system interface design and which one was a flat, albeit colored, shell for MS-DOS.

@ David Scholefield: I see you focused your attacks on the GUI. well let me tell you this. MS jumped from Command line to Colored GUI in 1989. 2 years later (1991) Apple came out with Mac OS 7 (first colored GUI) from Apple. so if you go back in history, you will notice a lot of functionalities (stolen) from MS. Sound recording, Music Player, Chatting, Office..oops sorry, Macs still have to use MS product like Office because theirs is not so user friendly nor functional. Macs get more Panic "attacks" that MS BSOD...and let me tell you that most of BSOD are cause of incompatible software, not MS fault. On the other hand, Panic errors come because the OS is not able to overcome multitasking (still in Leopard)..So do a little research before writing about OS Problems and Ideas Stealing..MS Windows is and will always be the most used and most Games and software compatible OS in the world.

PS..I own 3 different Mac notebooks (Powerbook, macbook pro gen1, macbook pro gen2) all of them have a GPU problem (burnt) due to Apple's non-consistent battery power management.

Simply put, they want to completely control the computer and entertainment market. Their OS only works on the computers they built (unless somehow tricked or modified). Their peripherals often use odd jacks so that only Mac products will work. And if it weren't for the fact that Mac users make up only a small minoity, iTunes would probably not have been writen for windos OS.

Macintosch makes some good products (make no mistake), but remember that by buying a Mac, you are giving power to a genuine Electronics Monopoly (im supprised AT&T hasn't been bought out and renamed iMobile). And you'd better be sure you can do what you need to on a Mac, cause it'd be an expensive mistake to make.

Your two points are validate weakness of Windows and should of be fixed with Vista. I believe MS needs to completely remove all legacy code from their OS.

You have completely missed the true issue here, that the top 3 OSes GUI fuctoin in similar ways. That the average user if given time will adapte to any of their interfaces.

At the kernel level they are far different but as far as usability they are very close.

WIn7 is the first version equal to OSX in my opinion.

AND I cant have the security, and estability I get on linux, in any other OS, soooo I use Ubuntu too XD.
My fav OS? Vista: cause is the most compatible Os in the world, U just need/must to have one Os from microsoft, cause everyone is usin´ it. MONOPOLY I hear!

You know what I find strange about the Mac vs MS thing. The fact that I know 3 people with macs. All 3 upgraded to Leopard and have had all kinds of problems. They all wish they could step back to tiger because of the stability issues. All three of them say things about snow leopard which sounds just like what everyone says about Vista and Win7. I've have read tons of stuff on the internet about issues with leopard that mimic what I've personally heard and it seems like Leopard was rushed to market. Why is that PC users feel free to trash the companies they patronize to anyone who will listen while PC users will circle the wagons and fight to the last man to defend Apple's virtue?

The reason that there are only "Apple-based computers" vs Dell/HP/*-brand PCs is because of what each company focuses on. MicroSOFT is a software company that focuses a large majority of their time on software (let's not neglect that they do have hardware too). Apple was dominantly a hardware team that started in the mid-1900s. It wasn't until they released OS-1 that they split their focus down the middle to hardware/software. Now that they have switched to the x86 architecture, it has pushed them farther into the software market and less into the hardware. However, this hasn't kept Apple from maintaining its exclusivity.

Just playing devil's advocate for a minute. Dell is just one example of a PC supplier who will happily sell you a machine with Linux installed on it, and many netbooks still don't come with a Windows option.

Conversely, you can't buy a Mac that doesn't come preinstalled with OS X.

One thing i've noticed is that there are no 3rd party laptop/computer makers that sell Mac based computers. See, like you can get an HP windows based pc, or a Dell windows based pc, but how come no other mac based computers from people other than Apple?

Microsoft is in more computers, because when you to buy one, it already has windows installed. And you have to pay for it. And you aren't offered a choice. And that, MUST be illegal. That's my view of M$: ILLEGAL.

"What they are very good at is developing things people want. How many of you would choose some brand X mp3 player over an iPod?"

Or any single, specific, brand-x phone over an iPhone for that matter?, or Operating System, oh, hang on, most of us don't actually get the choice on that one do we, so Microsoft dominates!

Market space domination is often a sign of lowest common denominator at work isn't it? Look at tabloid newspapers, TV quiz shows, and McBurgers...

The 'all OSs are pretty much the same' arguement only has merit in that Windows is finally starting to emulate some of Apple's better ideas, whilst creating an increasingly stable OS (at last). I still resent the continual need to reboot after an install, or cleansing my registry, or having updates constantly using up my Internet bandwidth, but at least Windows 7 has almost emulated Apple's Spotlight search system, and has emulated Apple's (and Linux's) QuickView icon system, and has started (although, again, quite badly) emulated Apple's ease of local networking. I can't think of a single, useful, Windows invention that made me look at the OS and say 'yes, that would make my life easier'. So, in superficial ways they are getting closer, but there is some catching up to do...

This is, yet again, becoming a Windows vs Mac war. The point that the author was making was that their comment about all operating systems being the same had provide controversial.

I was trying to say that when well informed people assert that your point is generally wrong, it doesn't mean you are being controversial, just wrong...

It's not about which OS is 'best', it's about whether they are substantially 'different' (which, of course, they are).

In order to discuss which is best, you have to start by agreeing how you measure 'best', which is far more complex. For example, does 'best' mean 'integrate more naturally with the maximum number of other computers by sharing a common code base', or 'engineered around abstract models that give the most potential for a stable and functionally exploitable user experience'? Until anyone agrees on the way to measure it - that discussion is pointless point-scoring. Most people can, however, agree the the OSs are quite different.

You guys who keep stating the obvious regarding Windows domination of the desktop are missing the point entirely.

There are a hell of a lot more Toyotas than BMWs out there, and that doesn't seem to be hurting BMW.

As near as I can tell, Apple isn't trying for world domination. What they are very good at is developing things people want. How many of you would choose some brand X mp3 player over an iPod?

You guys who keep stating the obvious regarding Windows domination of the desktop are missing the point entirely.

There are a hell of a lot more Toyotas than BMWs out there, and that doesn't seem to be hurting BMW.

As near as I can tell, Apple isn't trying for world domination. What they are very good at is developing things people want. How many of you would choose some brand X mp3 player over an iPod?

Sorry, but NeXT/OS X had Enterprise Object Frameworks and Web Objects long before Microsoft was even thinking along those lines. The whole point of NeXT's ObjC foundation was to allow facilitate the creation of applications and create a system where applications and frameworks all shared common guts, long before Microsoft started evangelizing C++.

Windows is not only about GUI and other things, but it's a connected foundation of system jointly together while collaboratively communicating in standard manner. Also the trends will continue to home usage of Windows to work with the mass community that windows has build upon, where mac has only stand out as unique product.
