Umm, if you think Vista is a downgrade from XP, You simply are not giving Vista enough credit. Most of its problems came from 3rd party drivers and OEM's that wanted to run Atom class CPU's on it.

Ya, same here. I hate it when windows processes are rattling all the time for... god knows what. Keep it simple, keep it clean for the apps you use. Who needs a bloated bling bling OS anyway? It's stupid.

i am the same way about running process...if i could create a shortcut for it...which im sure i could somewhere in the system 32 folder i would. i end processes constantly, and also disable alot of services....i run windows 7 64 bit,and 4 gigs of ram...which is sufficient i guess for my needs...that is some games, creating animated gifs, and soundforge for audio remastering...however i am still looking to get the most out of my pc...hell i dont even run an antivirus, because of all the processes it has to run..i know i know....but i do keep up on my hidden folders such as temporary internet folders and such....but in short i feel your pain

Well for all the people saying processes don't consume cpu or memory are dilusional, any time you have a (process) it means it is using system resources, the point is, less processes for things you don't use is better, your computer will also reap the benefit of being more responsive do to the event handler not required to keep track of all them (processes)

Hi.... I like your self like to keep my process to a minimal, but my philosophy is that every one is different in there needs some process might be useful for one but not another and for those who don't care make sure you have a plenty of ram and time (LOL). My best advice would be, make sure its not a vital process that might effect your PC stability or security, from there the rest is fair gain. I will admit that i do like allot of that so called "useless junk", for example those previews when you pause on a .avi file. I'm guessing one of Microsoft aim is elegance. Note all these small things IS what makes Win 7, Win 7. So my conclusion is "Ram is the future" as i always like to give back I came across this web page that surely will help most on deciding what is right for them. http://www.computingunleashed.com/2009/06/speed...

hope this helped

less processes is better, it always has been and always will be. More processes mean less available ram, less usable resources and more cpu time. An XP install with 17-20 processes can do everything and starts up in under 23 seconds on a 10 year old laptop.
Your computer is like a bus, the cpu is the engine, the processes are the passengers. The fewer passengers, the faster the bus accelerates, stops and goes up hills.

Your totally wrong see my explanation above, look for a file in a room of files, then look for a file in an otherwise empty room, I bet you find the file in the otherwise empty room much faster then a 6 foot pile of other files. computer tech of 10yrs and I can tell you it makes a lot of difference especially if your running CPU intensive programs.

Actually you DOWNGRADED from XP to Vista but welcome back to a great OS Vista is a bloated pile of crap compared to XP.

Secondly any process you load into ram is using other system resources such as your system Bus and your CPU as a constant flow of information is required as the CPU maintains communication so as not to lose the memory locations of that stored data.

Anytime you can disable an unneeded process your system reaps the benefits by decreasing the data flow to and from the CPU. Your only "WASTING" your RAM when you load it up with unneeded data, Ironically this is the very "REASON" Vista is an inferior OS compared to XP, it loads up your RAM and requires the use of resources that XP does not, that is why Vista decreases laptop battery life for instance, it requires to much processing from the CPU because of the crap loaded into RAM through the system processes.

The author of this article is on the right track, you should do more reading on the subject, my P4 3.2 ghz OC'd to 3.36ghz (very mild OC at 5%) handles streaming just fine with only 2 gigs of RAM but I keep my processes cleaned up too. Maybe that is why you can't.

Fellas, all these options about do this and don't do that avoids the stated purpose (the merely obvious stated purpose in any first year university course on computer software, which is about right for my poor little pea-brain). Which option you favor, whether more processes, more ram, more CPU horsepower, yin vs. yang, all the options (and myriad others) depends on what your overall or defining purpose that you use your computer for. (Take that sentence in for alteration or surgery, whichever comes first.) For intense games (what other kind are there), fractal or relational algebra in graphics or the like, cost no object, pour on the CPU, RAM, single-thread, prioritize and limit the number of processes (manually or by utility software). Chose and vis-a-vis any options for the overall purpose you intend to accomplish.

I also like to kill off excess processes.
WHY do windows vista/7 INSIST on running index services while you are working??? coulden't it just run it when the cpu is idle???
There are alot of services i kill on my computer... like superfetch, ready boost, index service.
Take a look at linux and keep the OS light.
Thanks for a excellent website. :-)

Thank you for reminding me how many processes are running on my WIN7 box. 59! I am going to hunt down the resource thieves and keep them at bay. I like a very slick machine that behaves just like you do.
Perhaps you might want to not only enlighten your readers about all of the processes you do not use, but where you go to disable them.
Thank you for a very excellent website.

Mike D has reason, as Windows will reduce the working set of inactive processes (i.e., will steal physical memory) if RAM is scarce and there are other active processes demanding RAM (i.e., sufering many page faults). Even the massive RAM usage of the Media Player Sharing only happens because, hey, your system has 8Gb of RAM with almost all of it free, so why not using a big chunk of that to cache media? RAM exists to be used for something, not to be kept free just so the user feels happy when staring at the Task Manager. A good OS will use as much of your RAM it can - efficiently. Only a small amount of physical RAM must be kept totally free, so allocation requests from apps can be satisfied extremely fast (without even the work of dealocating some RAM from low-priority tasks like the filesystem cache).
Having said that, I still disable unneeded services because I often run very heavyweight apps (I'm a developer) and my laptop has only 2Gb, and even if Windows can steal memory from inactive processes when I start something lik Oracle Database, this takes some time.
