I really don’t like the windows 7 search methods. Why can’t they just provide what we used to have? You know, the search pane that was easy to use? It does not matter what I type into that stupid “search” box, nothing ever happens. Ever!

I agree, I soon realized when I tried to use the Windows 7 Search functionality in anger that there is nothing there! It seems impossible to manipulate folders like you could in XP! I will have to download a 3rd party tool like Norton used to be with DOS.

I don’t think there are any people left at MS, only a few blogger shills who right nearly verbatim kudos for every article that praises the Windows 7 search feature. I am starting to think that W& was produced by a self replicating program that for got to put a user feedback loop in its learning process. It likes what it has created so it keeps “improving” itself, not realizing that eventually it will improve itself out of existence. If it gets good enough, it will no longer need users at all.

I can’t agree more with the posts. It’s absolutely extraordinary that you can’t restrict your search to a filename. I have a couple of files with a common name, but I get thousands of listings because the name is inside many files. I worked on a VAX in the 1980s, and that had a better file search command than this ridiculous search function in Windows 7. By the way, do you people at Microsoft read these comments? If you did, you might learn something. And one thing you might learn is to fire the idiots who came up with this new search procedure. I’m still shaking my head in amazement.

This is big fault from Microsfot, I changed to 7 recently and it is effected my work very much, because I can’t find files with certian text inside, and I have to operate on 2 laptops to find files, but this is not practical

KUDOS ON THE SUGGESTED PROGRAMS, voidtool’s Everything is just simple and powerful, small little (FREEWARE) program bringing shame to the millions of dollars wasted on Windows 7 search tool, and Freecomander brings back control and gets rid of that feeling of “made for stupid people” that surrounds all Windows 7 environment… great options!

Windows 7 search simply doesn’t work. If it can be made to work then it must be totally unintuitive. I type in the name of a file or folder that I know exists but the search typically returns a bunch of random hits NONE of which include that file or folder. Another vote for good old crappy Win95 style search that works.

This article seems written by Bill Gates trying to sell us what is injustifiable. Why they removed the old fashioned SEARCH that worked great. If they want to add this new piece of sh*t, they can do it without removing the old feature. And by the way let me remember the author that the wild cards exists since DOS. Probably the author doesn’t have enough experience.

Windows 7 search system is way too complicated. Was following tutorial at : http://computing-tips.net/Change_IP_Address_Windows_7/ which is much same as this but even after doing everything, I still can’t find files easily or at all. Windows 7 is the worst OS I know of.

This “Everything” tool from http://www.voidtools.com does exactly what I was looking for when I went on Google looking for this thread! I found all my .pst files in a second. It’s perfect for my needs. Google Desktop Search will search the contents of my files, but I was frustrated that I couldn’t easily find files and folders.

Win 7 is a disaster for POWER USERS, too. Nowhere that I can find can I look for files called *proposal*.doc* without picking up any document that has the word ‘proposal’ or ‘doc’ in the body text of the document.

I can't believe that i am having to revert to DOS to find files that i want.

It's almost unbelievable that they have removed a really good search tool - what people havn't realised (or at least not pointed out) is that they actually removed the search function in Vista and then CARRIED IT INTO Win7 thinking that it was a good idea!!!

How do you search for a special character? I need to search for file names with a “$” in it but that returns EVERYTHING on the drive. I can't search for what i need to search for. Ug.

My next computer will be a Mac, I am thru with the IDIOTS in Redmond. I am completely fed up with garbage like changing the control panel, why? So they can charge tech's big bucks to take more classes and get re-cetified. I am done with my games and other programs not functioning anymore because of changes that never seem to affect old MS games and programs. C-YA.

Search in Win7 is working great for me. It's indexing my files, so that I can search the contents of files and get results back very quickly. Combine this with the koolness of Libraries, and it recently made me start using Windows Search over my previous desktop search engine of choice – Copernic. I haven't gotten the Group By to work yet, tho.

I have a file named “Hopewell.doc”, that is in “My DocumentsGenealogyCemeteriesHopewell”. This Windows 7 search crap will not find that file … or that directory … but it will find loads of files that have nothing to do with the search criteria — like “01 – Hotel California.mp3″.

I've gotten to where I run Cmd and perform a “DIR”. It's faster and more reliable.

Oh, that is “easy to configure” as well. (Easy is the new Difficult at MS)
Go to “Organize” -> “Folder Options” -> “Search” and you can configure this one as well as the (also missing) subfolder search switch. Again, MS made our life so much easier by grouping everything together what belongs together! Thank you! Thank you so much! (Ironie /off)

Right on. What were those morons thinking when they did away with the simple, fast and efficient search feature in previous windows. You had to simply click f3, the you could specify any and all kinds of parameters (date,type of document, etc), you could also tell whether you wanted to search terms in the file names or within the actual document. try anything like that with this “improved” search disaster. Most people apparently were never aware of this simple search feature, including the designers of this crazy new set up in windows 7. What a nerve trying system they came up with. Incredible.
