You can choose to buy the Upgrade version for XP, which will allow you to upgrade to Win7 and keep all of your files (at a cheaper price), or you can buy the full version (more expensive) and install it clean.

I really enjoy ready all the articles here. It helps me a lot in ynderstanding windows 7. But I must admit, I am confused on one important thing. I have an older system 5 years old running Window XP multimedia with service pack 3. I really do not need the multimedia part of it. I want to upgrade it to Windows 7 but on your URL, one point it states I have to load the entire version of Windows 7 but in another area, I can just update it to Windows 7. Which is it. I have several systems running XP and several running Vista so I am trying to determine my best options and cost.

The pricing of windows 7 is way expensive , Microsoft should start reconsedering this insane price. this is a price to make the U.S.A get over its financial problems on our accounts.

Microsoft’s pricing and upgrading plans for Windows 7 in Europe are bordering on a farce. You can’t upgrade from a previous version of Windows, but you can elsewhere in the world. You can buy the upgrade product but you will get full retail box instead.

If you want to use the upgrade disc, you will have to install it on the same partition as XP. If you want to install it on a separate partition, you will have to obtain the full version.

I agree with the EU’s decision and wish it had been reciprocated in the United States, but I have to disagree with you. The prices are outrageous (remember that one pound is about two dollars).

Captain Obvious, they were already selling Vista Ultimate for €500 in Europe: that is $700! (now it’s less).
As to the cost of repackaging Windows 7 for Europe, that should be next to nothing, considering that Europe has a potential market of hundred of millions!
But some American companies (another one is Apple) look upon Europeans as “cows to be milked”.

Simon, EU users are paying more because of the lawsuit which requires Microsoft to remove IE8 and Windows Media Player from the OS and repackage it. The costs incurred are being tied into the pricing. EU boycotting a product after costing Microsoft loads of money to change it to satisfy EU does not make sense. It is like wanting to buy a tailored tux without paying the taylor, except in this case it is a Windows OS designed and taylored by Microsoft for you.

I will definitely pre-order Windows 7 Professional. Hope it is possible to pre-order the US version of the operating system from Europe as I would like to receive the version with Internet Explorer 8. I initially wanted to buy Windows 7 Home Premium but the price of Windows 7 Pro is very attractive which made me change my decision. I might buy a Home Professional copy as well as every user is allowed to purchase 3 licenses.
