Windows Vista and Windows 7 do have RAW image support.
You just need to download a codec from your camera manufacturer's web site or from a third party (like us) if you need 64 bit support.

i think that windows is doing fine, and have done fine with windows vista. people are too worried about memory consumption, most ppl now have 3+GB of memory. think about it. Even while playing a game with your favorite websites minimized and ur Instant Messenger in the background you are still running just a lil bit over 1.2GB usage. So what is the big deal people have with something using memory if you have pleanty that will never be touched?

There's a very good point right there. Developing for XBOX/PS is much easier and cheaper than the PC counter-part...
But i'm running Linux Mint + Wine, and i get better FPS at some games than in Windows 7... I can't help meyself wonder if with a dedicated gamming OS the gain wouldn't be worth the effort...

The reason that the Xbox has such good graphics is because the games are being developed for STANDARD hardware. Developers know that this hardware will never change (substantially anyway there will always be revisions) and can use the cards quirks, advantages and disadvantages without fear of breaking compatibility with other cards purely in the name of improving the graphics and FPS we see when we play. Consoles developers have to optimise their code and be prepared to play around to get it running right on the console's hardware. That is also the reason why we tend to see games with better graphics after a console has been out for a while.
On PC they simply go you need a better graphics card, better CPU, higher version of DirectX, newer OS or better sound card.

Well... i don't see why is not feasable... And i don't mean just sepparate kernel. I also mean separate OS.
They already have the XBOX OS with such a kernel, they only have to add it driver support layer...
Then, you'd just install the OS together with windows... That happens with alot of people... I mean, the XBOX is a computer, with very low specs and has those cool graphics. Imagine what it could do with our PCs...
I think that buying the OS would be alot cheaper than upgrading our riggs all the time or buying PS/XBOX or WIIs...

I think that buying the OS would be alot cheaper than upgrading our riggs all the time or buying PS/XBOX or WIIs…

Well... i don't see why is not feasable... And i don't mean just sepparate kernel. I also mean separate OS.

well they can do it, but I simply said why would they. and seperate kernel does not seem, i'm sure feasable..
anyways the solution to this is to get lots of ram have 64bit system, get SSD hdd's raid them, get very high fsb mb. get quad cpu. etc.. :) anyways this is it from me. i'm not to decide anyhow..

Yes i can.
But have you compared the gain from such a thing? You don't get more than 5 FPS, and that's if you actually get more FPS. And that's nothing. Normally you only free up some RAM, and the game might run smoother...
And that's nothing compared with the gain we could obtain from a separate, dedicated, built from scratch to game, OS.

@XtremeMac
Windows XP Media Center was basically a standalone program and was installed separately from WinXP Home/Pro.It is now a standard tool like WMP since Vista.
You can have a game mode in any OS, it could be a simple shortcut that turns off unneeded service as it launches or a completely separate account you log into.
You can have your pie, cake and ice cream all at the same time as far as a game mode in a Windows OS is concerned.

Well, it's simple. You just made assumptions.
I don't mind dual booting, i don't mind separate OSes, and i surely don't need Windows to set up my PC security for me. I know very well how to avoid virus, and how protect myself, just in case there's one or two i can't avoid...
That's why i said i disagree with the gaming mode proposed here. The benefits of such a thing would be minimal. So i suggested that they keep Windows as it is. And make a new one, which is already half-way since is just a matter of adapting the XBOX OS, and sell it to who ever want more gaming performance from their PC...

That's all i'm saying. It's just a suggestion.

And make a new one, which is already half-way since is just a matter of adapting the XBOX OS, and sell it to who ever want more gaming performance from their PC...

That's all i'm saying. It's just a suggestion.

hi there, u're in very deep conflict i've to say.
on one hand u want all the gear and security for your software to work properly with dual/quad core capability.
on the other hand u want none of the gear and sec so that u can play games..
so basically u want to switch from one compact kernel to full kernel whilst having the same os name winETC.
how would u like to explain this to MS? I don't want ps3/xbox/wii. I don't want to spend a lot of money. I don't want to have seperate os's. I don't want linux/etc.. I want billy to make an os that has a switch button....
it can only be sane, logical with 2 os's. that's what I think.
u want a high performing car and u want to drive it to the limit using 1000hp, but u want it to consume little amounts of gas.
get a city car, get a track car..

Oh, about multi-boot with XP:
XP doens't do well with Multi-Core. And also the support is being reduced. No Direct 10 or higher. And also, XP was not designed to be stripped down of stuff, so my experience says that when you do that, it gets even more unstable.
Bottom line: XP was a great OS, one we will never forget, but it just doesn't cut it anymore.
Also, the kernel of XP, Vista and W7 wasn't designed with (just) gaming in mind...
That's all in saying.

What would you rather buy:
PS, XBOX or WII for hundreds of $$$
Or an OS for about $100?

I really think Microsoft would redesign the gaming industry with such a product...

I must disagree with you about the kernel. Processors have multi-core now, and bigger instruction sets, and the kernel support more and more functionalities, and more security, and more stability, and that my friend, comes with a cost, wich is size. And that's the truth.
I'm just saying that with an OS based on a trimmed down of security, accessibility, everything that is not need in functionality, security and interface.
That would make the difference between buying a PS/XBOX for $500 every few years, or buying the $100 or so OS for the same years. That is the difference.
The XBOX is nothing more than a PC with an OS like i said inside it. The only thing different is that the XBOX OS has the drivers built into kernel, because the hardware is allways the same... Change that, and goodbye gaming consoles.
Also, i do want a gaming PC, and i don't see why do i have to buy an XBOX to play halo, a WII to play Mario, and a PS to play GT or something.
That's just dumb, when i already have the hardware i need...

That would make the difference between buying a PS/XBOX for $500 every few years, or buying the $100 or so OS for the same years. That is the difference.
The XBOX is nothing more than a PC with an OS like i said inside it. The only thing different is that the XBOX OS has the drivers built into kernel, because the hardware is allways the same… Change that, and goodbye gaming consoles.
Also, i do want a gaming PC, and i don’t see why do i have to buy an XBOX to play halo, a WII to play Mario, and a PS to play GT or something.
That’s just dumb, when i already have the hardware i need…

I must disagree with you about the kernel. Processors have multi-core now, and bigger instruction sets, and the kernel support more and more functionalities, and more security, and more stability, and that my friend, comes with a cost, wich is size. And that's the truth.

kernel is already very small, the eyecandy stuff and security stuff are bloating it. if u only want a gaming pc then u're better of buying a ps/xbox. in the mean while this sort of manual solution I believe is the only solution. u can also use nlite on xp to get rid of everything and multiboot with win7
