The worry is that with security patches and the bloating which accompanies Service packs, Windows 7 will become just as slow as Vista is now.

what was vista then?? was it just an interim OS microsoft just released for a sinister reason?? i mean with windows 7 out who will want to remain with vista considering the low resources and ease 7 provides as compared with windows vista. the battle then will have to be between users of XP and 7. ALTHOUGH I KNOW A LOT OF DIEHARD XP users like me who are already quivering for the release of a more stable version of 7.

I agree with smilingman above. A lot of bigger corporations wait for the first SP to appear before they even consider getting machines with the new operating system, I guess the SP1 will include whatever will have to be left out to meet the 22nd October release date, which is pretty good move if you ask me.

I have been using Win7 for about 4 months and I have had minor issues. Most of those issues are do to legacy hardware, beta drivers and not fully supported software.
If a service pack is already being development that is a good think, here are my thoughts:

1. Features that were not ready for releases

2. Better and faster service pack development

3. Smaller service packs every year

4. Better 3rd party support before releases

5. Faster IT and security support

These are just my opinions
I think MS wants business to adopt Win7 much faster than Vista and this also may translate to more retail sells.

ok i just read on the other site windows7newsinfo.com

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 branch
7138.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090523-2200
7139.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090526-xxxx
7140.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090527-xxxx
7141.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090528-xxxx

Quote:
As The Site writes, it doesn't currently plan to release any of these SP1 builds.

Also, today is a day of Windows 7 RC2 sign-off. When the situation with RC2 becomes clear, The Site will decide what to release: either SP1 or "something more interesting".

Windows 7 SP1 builds are currently available in the following languages: en-us, de-de, fr-fr, ja-jp, es-es. But Microsoft doesn't provide language packs for non-main branches (so as I understand their words, SP1 builds available in 5 languages as images, but no LIPs / LPs for them available).

Windows 7 RTM is planned for the end of july.

7141.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090528-xxxx

Whether it's photo-shopped or not, most likely there will be an SP1 release sooner or later. That's just the way Microsoft works.

Microsoft could use it to add new features to the operating system that did not make it into the final product.

Yeah, this is what I think. When I worked in software development, it was normal to realize some stuff was taking longer to implement or fix. Other stuff would be flagged as for the patch or next release.

I can only believe that's normal behavior and that companies like MS do it as well. I'd be very surprised if they weren't at least fleshing out SP1 before the beta. So now that we're at the RC stage, I imagine development on SP1 is taking up the time of at least a few people.

Checked the placing of the "service pack 1" in a blowup of the pic, and it is aligned horizontally and vertically perfectly with the other text up to the pixel, so that's no indication at all (can still be a decent photoshop of cource).

More likely Microsoft is testing the use of a service pack with test files so they can see the way it installs. A bit the same as testing how well an OS upgrade works compared to a fresh install. No use developing an RTM if it later can't take a service pack.

Or still photoshop who cares? ;-)

Or they are really crazy and actually are working on a service pack...

Every windows release is a service pack.

Some are just called service packs.

We just got Vista SP2. Must assume that a little bit of RC7 is in there.

It's a smart and a dumb move all in one, but overall it's smart. Yeah, lets ship so many copies of the os out to retailers, but not too many because we will give them SP1 soon and the others who have already purchase will get the free upgrade. It sounds easy and effective.

Basically they are going to give you the core product to work with and by others giving a load of feedback it looks like the core product should do well. While your playing around with that they now have time to have fun adding new features and fixes(hopefully minor) that consumers want and need. Then up pops SP1. TAAAA DAAAA!!!! lol.
