what we need right now is an OS that updates and maintaines itself without prompting, a kind of HAL (not a bad brain in it) , so you can focus yourselves on the job you're doing and not on that machine that constantly needs nurturing and pampering like a baby, MICROSOFT > MICROHARD!

As a user of both Mac OS and Windows, I have to disagree. Finder maybe slightly faster, but it's far less user friendly and customizable. Information is displayed nicely on the details pane in Explorer, Aero Snap and Aero Peek make file transfer and use much easier, and the small windows apps like the new WMP 12 and Photo Viewer are almost as fast as quick look. (although I wouldn't mind a quick look feature)

Instead of looking forward to Windows 8, you should consider the entire next decade. Microsoft only has 2-3 Windows releases scheduled before 2020, and no plan has been articulated for getting rid of the viruses and commercial malware (Windows 7 runs 80% of XP malware) which are unique to the Windows platform. So all they are planning to do is continue to polish the XP turd.

By 2020, there will be 11 more iPhone OS releases, 10 releases of Google Chrome OS, and 5-6 releases of Mac OS. None of these systems have viruses or malware, and they all have a modern HTML5 Web browser with more than double the speed of IE8. I don't see a future for Windows when Microsoft is moving that slowly compared to the rest of the industry.

How are breadcrumbs bad? You can get the old text back by clicking in the location bar. You no longer need the up button because you can click on the next level in the breadcrumb.

And I don't really see what you are talking about with the other things.

Breadcrumbs are bad.
Removing the up one folder button was bad.
Changing the folder thumbnails icon was bad.
Too much wasted space and deeper menus are bad.
No customization of all that wasted space is bad.
A newly extracted/created folder getting auto sorted with no way to change that is bad.

All the new changes that don't make it better do make it slower..

I do like the new mouse hover effect though.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Type is by far the most important sort field, and it should be set to default, or at the very least always visible.

At least it's better than OSX's Finder... that damn thing changes the sorting whenever you change the view!

I am a user of QTTabs and I agree that the new menu bar setup is restricting.
It should be completely customizable, this change took me the longest to relearn.
Hopeful a 3rd party program will fix this short coming.

I am a user of QTTabs and I agree that the new menu bar setup is restricting.
It should be completely customizable, this change took me the longest to relearn.
Hopeful a 3rd party program will fix this short coming.

If anything, windows Explorer went backwards after XP.
For example, I cannot even customise the Explorer ommand bar (or whatver its called) and put buttons such as Copy & Paste. Since Vista, we have just one utterly pointless "Organise" button on bar with a lot of wasted space. So now, instead of being able to click Copy then Paste, you have to click Organise - Copy - Organise - Paste. you cannot even drag the icons from the organise drop down list to the Explorer bar. So much for progress.

And don't tell me to right click instead, some of us dont have as much manual dexterity as others, and I find it very difficult to use the right mouse button.

Explorer is now so bad, I have to use a third party addon such as QT Tab Bar in explorer, which doesn't yet work properly in Win 7, or substitute Explorer completely for Free Commander. The fact these programs even exist shows how much MS have lost the plot.

With this talk of Windows 8 makes me think they have it made with 7 already. We all need to convey anything that we would like to see within Windows 7 before they let them go (the people working on it). I was looking forward to Windows 7 and some of the changes making it better than Vista, since I just had to upgrade early. Now I have second thoughts and what I see that I like, I already use and like on my iMac 24. That's where I should stay. My new Desktop is only good for gaming, since Apply has no games that aren't goofy...

They need to make config. windows explore to one personal liking easier. As of now it takes so digging to get it just the way I like.
A context menu and personalization panel like the one for appearance and sounds would be great.
Integrations of features from programs like Xplorer2 also would be nice.

Then, why don't you try out Mac OS X? It's Finder (= Windows explorer for Mac) is much better in preformance than the Windows 7 one, althrough the design of Windows 7's one is better.

I agree.

But to be honest, I don't really care for how file management is done in any current OS. The libraries are a good first step and I look forward to seeing what follows i W8.

For me it's all about acessibility (I'm legally blind). Even though high-dpi improved it is still a constant seting for all your programs and cannot be set on a per-aplication basis (like the "compatibility mode" for example) and some older programs with absolute positionning really don't respond well with high-dpi so I find myself forced to disable it for a few program, then log out and log back in again ...

I do think they should have pushed the library concept further and itnegrating search much deeper into the OS. There should be, by default, libraries for office documents, videos, etc ...
