The best thing about Win7 is that it runs on such low system requirements that 10 year old PC can be used and not end up in landfills.
I took 5+ year old hardware and was able to build a stable system to give to a friend and she loves the new OS.
Even with Aero disabled it is still a productive OS to use. Most people want miss the extra eye candy.
I bet that more than 60% of PC user do not need more than the minimum requirements anyway, remember that power users like us are a very small base, I quest 10% at lease.

yes, Windows 7 will run Ok on any kind of RAM, even 512 MB, but still it depands for what you're using your PC. That's why Win 7 has PC hardware rating feature. Windows 7 diagnoses what hardware configuration you have and RAM utilization is due to that. Windows 7 always uses RAM and other PC resources due to what you've got and not won't require more then you have. That's why it is fast and stable.

and still, if you want to run games, just get extra 1 or 2 GB RAM for you and enjoy Aero and 3D games and graphics simultaneously :)

These are the minimum requirements, which means it will run *acceptably*. I have tested running it with an anti-virus with only 512MB of RAM and it did OK for common tasks.
I think anyone who play games on a PC is aware that these requirements are not optimal.

>Windows 7 Aero and games simultaneously
Aero is temporarily disabled when a fullscreen DirectX application is running.

It is incompatible with Aero. You can run Win7 nevertheless, but only using Aero Basic theme.

(2 GB for 64-bit systems)

Why is that? 64-bit software tend to use a little bit more memory than 32-bit versions, but that doesn't explain the extra 1GB requirements.

A lot of users on my blog have said they have tried running Windows 7 with 512MB RAM and performance was barely sluggish. It seems that Windows 7 adjusts its RAM utilization depending on how much RAM you have installed. I do suggest 2GB for "optimal" performance

Umm, what if I just have a DX8 vid card, will Win 7 install& run? If the requirements listed above are the 'Minimum' system requirements, then a dx8 card would be incompatible?

Well Martin, that's what Microsoft has announced, but in fact, 1Gb RAM for 32-bit version, isn't the optimal decision I think.... Becouse for secure browsing and file sharing, also for secure IM and other things, you really need an antivirus. This makes it essential to have at least 2Gb RAM for 32-bit version. This will enable you to run antivirus, Windows 7 Aero and games simultaneously. This is my opinion :)

But if you disable Aero and forget about games, even 512Mb RAM will be enough, I think :)
