If you have a legacy application running in XP Mode and therefore on a VM, if it needs to interract with Outlook then can it do so with the Outlook client installed on the host Win7 PC or do you need a separate installation on the VM?

Thats Microsoft for you alright. Only problem with that is most end users are going to install the Home Premium Edition due to cost. So they are left with out xp compatible program.

Doing a google search will lead you to see that not all those USB to parallel port devices are the same. In fact, most of them are just printer ports, not real (bidirectional) parallel ports. However, for a little more many there are some that at least claim to be real parallel ports, however these will tend to be not USB but express-card slot devices. A lot of old software, and some equipment can not sue a printer port, full parallel port is needed. This would be true of any dongle (if you are saying the parallel port has dongle?

So basically you can either pay Microsoft more money OR kiss all of your old apps goodbye.
If I wanted to dualboot Windows, the other OS would not be an earlier version; it would be Linux. Heck, Linux is more compatible with Windows that Windows is!

Smooth move, Microsoft.

I believe the title of this page should say "Windows XP Mode" NOT "Windows XP Compatibility Mode" because they are two different things.
XP Mode allows you to run an XP VM on your Windows 7 host. This is an actual REAL VM. Everythign that applies to a real computer applies here, requires backup, antivirus, Windows Updates, etc.
XP compatiblity mode is NOT a VM. It deals with application compatiblity and allows you to use SHIMS. Shims intercepts API calls from an application to the Windows OS. A common shim is a WindowsVersionLie Shim. Say you have an application that was written to perform an OS version check on start up. It is common for the developer to code and IF statement that says. If OS version is EQUAL to Windows XP, etc. But what heshe should have coded is "If OS version is EQUAL to OR GREATER than Windows XP, etc. If coded incorrectly an applicaiton that would run just fine on Windows 7 (if not for the version check) would never start. The VersionLie shim simple responds back to the application and says Yes I am running Windows XP. This then allows the application to start.
So XP Mode = a full Windows XP VM
Compatiblity Mode = shimming of an applicaiton that is NOT a VM
Hope this helps

The software she mentioned was for the embroidery machine, and it probably would cost about $2500. If you don't sell thousands of copies of an application, you can't really ask a much lower price. Even Photoshop, which sells a LOT of copies, still costs about $1k. (for the tricked out version, anyway)

If you get the Windows 7 Professional (or higher), you will be able to download the Windows XP Virtual Environment for free. This simply represents a seamless virtual environment for XP applications. For any version, if you already have a copy of Windows Vista on your PC, you can create a dual-boot setup on your hard drive for when you want to use the embroidery machine with Windows XP. Here's an illustrated guide:

If you get the Windows 7 Professional (or higher), you will be able to download the Windows XP Virtual Environment for free. This simply represents a seamless virtual environment for XP applications. For any version, if you already have a copy of Windows Vista on your PC, you can create a dual-boot setup on your hard drive for when you want to use the embroidery machine with Windows XP. Here’s an illustrated guide:

[...] If you have an application that had issues with Vista, you might now have a chance that it will work under Windows 7 with the use of ‘XP Compatibility Mode’ which emulates Windows XP in a virtual environment. You’ll need the Professional edition of Windows 7 to take advantage of this. Click on this post for more info XP Compatibility Mode.
I doubt it costs $2500, you can run windows 7 and Vista easy on a $700 PC.

I'd suggest just buying a new PC :P

And also, please note that if you're from EU, you won't be able to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

What if we have Vista Home Premium and are upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium will we not be able to get this fix to have Windows Virtual XP? I have an older embroidery machine that requires XP to run. It also requires a parellel port for the card reader. I did contact Husqvarna about a patch and they basically told me I had to purchase the $2500.00 new software, that they were not going to do any patches for this machine. I purchased a new laptop which doesn't have a parellel port. If I purchased a cord to try and connect to a USB if it will even recognize the card reader which has a dongle attached. If anyone has any clue on how to help or where I can go to ask for help, I would greatly appreciate any comments.

how do you get virtual xp to run?

There are no menus to enable you to run virtual xp (I'm assuming it's the same as Virtual PC) in the RC1 candidate.

Hmm. From the software developer point of view id does not look too great.
1. Microsoft can now remove old 'baggage' of API creating new OSs claiming that it is fully compatible with older ones anyway using VirtualPC
2. Older programs will be immediatelly moved into virtualPC domain which means that they will run way slower and will be more cumbersome to be used effectively forcing developers to release quickly for each new OS... :-(
