Just a reply to the comment, "when you buy a new laptop or netbook or whatever it's called these days, isn't there ALWAYS an OS installed, whether you like it or not?" This is probably true in the USA but is not necessarily true worldwide. I have often purchased laptops with no OS.

You dont need to do anything special to get windows 7 installed from usb. Just open up the iso with win rar, extract straight to the usb disk(can be quicker to move files to hard drive 1st)

Boot from usb and your golden. Microsoft have done this on purpose, to make it easier and quick for installing etc. Its a great move in terms of making it easy to install, will be interesting if there are any piracy issues with this way, but not really anymore than what there are now.

What is wrong with just making a DVD from the ISO file then copying the DVD to the USB drive, then installing from the USB drive? I've installed MS Office and several other programs work that way since out laptops don't have DVD drives.

to make a removable usb drive show up in cmd. prompt go to my computer icon, right click on icon, left click on properties, left click on hardware, left click on device manager, expand disk drives, double click on the usb drive you want (it must be plugged in already) left click on policies and select the bottom choice...(hint) if you already formatted with fat 32, mark partition as active(with disk manag. or 3rd party app., copy all files from win7 rc .iso( mount .iso in virtutal drive or use 3rd party .iso editor ie...ultra iso, magic iso to copy to usb drive, set bios to boot from usb fdd drive. lol

Although its not required, as Froosh said, after 'Assign' (which is required) you can type 'Exit' which exits Disk Part and puts you back into Command Prompt.

From Here you can move the files from the disc (iso) to your flash drive/usb stick etc via command line.

Type:
xcopy D:\ /s/e/f E:/

(D:\ being the ISO/Disc) and (E:\ being the USB stick/drive).

Apparently this method works for Vista as well, but strangely not XP :(. This takes a few mins so be patient. Hope this helps

The missing step at the end is "assign" in diskpart.

After formatting the partition (with "format fs=fat32 quick"), type "assign". Now, with explorer or "list volume" you should see the new partition.

The missing step at the end is "assign" in diskpart.

After formatting the partition (with "format fs=fat32 quick"), type "assign". Now, with explorer or "list volume" you should see the new partition.

I have a Sandisk Micro 8 GB USB drive. I have purchased it recently. I opened the command prompt and typed 'diskpart'. Then I typed 'list disk'. Unfortunately, the system only shows the system drive(Drive C) in the list. It does not show my USB drive at all. I even gave the command 'rescan' and the same problem persists. I formatted my USB drive with FAT32 as the file system and even after this, it doesn't show up in the list of disks. The disk is active and I am able to transfer data to/from it. I have formatted it with FAT32 as the file system. Even after formatting, the issue isn't resolved.

I would like to install Windows 7 RC this way as I don't have a DVD writer.

Kindly help me in resolving this issue.

- choose your usb stick
- choose a metod (I use usb-hdd+)
- press write

THAT IS ALL!!!
