Yes you can. Because what you may be thinking of is a dedicated video card. Most motherboards come with on-board video graphics, so to answer your simple question, yes you can. As long as you have a video out you can do it.

Or if you are thinking of running a ghosting program on an exact same machine, you could do that to. Just make an exact copy of the existing hard drive and pop it into the different system and boot right up.

got it running on a P3 800mhz compaq deskpro with 512Mb of ram and old on-board intel graphics (using a win2000 driver). Will run Youtube videos nicely in a window, but full screen it and it'll only pull 2 fps. Nice exercise though. Windows update installed all the hardware automatically except the video chip, and added in a usb2 card for speed as the computer came out pre-usb2.

Using Windows 7 on my 6 year old laptop. P4 3.0 GHz, 1.5 GB memory, 64mb nvidia graphics ram and the system is working great, didnt have any problems. Aero is working perfectly. Didnt expect to, was really shocked. Even works better than XP when i had it. Amazing OS so far.

Tried W7 32 bits 7068 on an 4 years old HP dekstop 3 GHZ CPU / 512 RAM / Sata disk

Was extremely suprised: Running well and faes, opened 50 tabs in IE 8, and still was under 512 MB of RAM

No AV was installed, and it take 320 MB at boot, but you can save 40 MB of RAM if you desactivate the real time Windows Defender, wich, of course makes your system more vulnerable

We tried Vista on same machine few months ago, and it was a big disaster

Yes, W7 run much better

Thanks Microsoft

Most media center stuff is done by the CPU, so a good GPU isn't essential here.

I agree with Fab! on ranking hardware just for the OS. I posted here before about how any new OS should not use morethan 15% more resource than the prevince version.
Vista killed my 1GB RAM system when I first tried it and that was a mid-level gaming rig too. When I upgraded to 2GB it was usable, but I could not understand how this is what took six years of R&D to make. My minimum spec's for Win7 feel more like this;
2.0GHZ Celeron / Duron
2GHz of PC400 DDR
250MB GeForce 7xxx / Radeon 1xxxx
40GB IDE hard drive
16bit audio Realtek / Sound Blaster

I recently upgrade some old pc and I try to build the lowest spec system that will let my lite gaming, photo editing and A/V encoding.

I think you'll honestly need AT LEAST something with hyperthreading. So a Pentium 4 "prescott" 3.0ghz should be considered the minimum (socket 478, so it's really cheap). Also, LGA 775 isn't dead yet and it's been one of the best platforms for building really good systems. A great majority of systems already ship with it and you can easily take them from dual to quad.

Mainstream PCs should be at least Pentium Dual Core. Enthusiast PCs should be anything quad. Also, HDDs and RAM are always the cheapest and easiest ways to boost system responsiveness. Good program performance starts with those 2. I mean, why work these OS's in such constrained environments?

And graphics...should stop being thought of as a gaming thing. It's becoming more and more important to have a decent gpu. Even if you're just going to view youtube and hulu and some media center stuff. The fact is that even a low end or midrange graphics chip can pay off in keeping cpu usage low enough to have more apps or windows running.

I also think that Windows 7 will start to change how we think about each performance class. And WEI is bad idea people, whether or not they make room for newer hardware. I applaud MS for trimming things down to just either the home user or the professional user. But the real goal here should still remain that the ideal OS should deliver exceptional results while running on ANY PC. Not introducing a ranking system for peoples egos.

Hi 'disgruntled'

Chill! I've just searched for your IP in the spam filter and there aren't any deleted comments - something else must have gone wrong. As you can see from previous comments and your current one, we have a fairly relaxed comment policy!

Thanks for the constructive feedback btw!

What is your problem? I posted a perfectly useful comment for people on this site and you meet it by removing it. There was no spam or anything. You bunch of useless twats. I must say the page layout of this shitty site is a pain in the arse and your admins are about as useful as a fucking turd.

I just don't get why you would remove a comment that is helpful unless you are some snooty little idiot admin who thinks they rule the web. I'm completely fucking sick of people like you. Open your fucking eyes to whats going and take you head out of your arse!

Ooh Wordpress eh?! I hope you've set your security up.

Running build 7000 on a Pentium 4 2.93 GHz with 4 GB DDR2 RAM and a FX5200 256MB and I'm not overly satisfied. I feel like its a little sluggish but it may be because its on a small 32 GB IDE hard drive while Windows 7 might be better on a SATA drive.

Also running it on a laptop with an intel core 2 duo T7250 (2.0GHz). It runs beautifully and I have not had a problem with it yet.

Beta build 7000 runs alright with the following
Mobile Intel Pentium 3Â 1.2GHz (SL6A9)
Intel 82830M graphics controller (48MiB shared graphics memory)
512MiB 133MHz SDRAM
20 gig partition, less than 8GB used
Aero is of course disabled.
